Position Classifications:
General Status: position is a FULL-TIME position
General Statement of Duties:
Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance and replacement of streets and storm drainage facilities and systems.
Essential Functions:
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.
1. Performs basic preventative maintenance and repair of City street and storm drainage systems and the operation of equipment requiring highly skilled manipulation of controls and attachments in maneuvering for safe and efficient special purpose operations.
2. Participates in a work crew or instructs work crew activity of other equipment operators.
3. Operate City vehicles and equipment.
4. Drives truck for transporting fill materials, berming, operations, towing a trailer and leaf machine.
5. Plows snow, removes ice, spreads salt and salt brine.
6. Operates backhoe to ditch, slope banks in ditches and set stone sewer pipe and culvert.
7. Operates backhoe to cut deep ditches, set and dig out curbs, and excavate streets.
8. Operates heavy roller in pavement repair operations.
9. Operates tractors with specialized equipment.
10. Operates sewer jet and vacuum.
11. Makes daily inspection of assigned equipment.
12. Assists in the training of lower-level employees to increase their skills in the maintenance, construction and repair of streets and storm drainage facilities.
13. Performs preventative maintenance and reports major maintenance needs and mechanical problems.
14. Performs all duties in conformance with appropriate safety and security standards.
15. Periodic overtime work.
16. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public.
17. Interact tactfully and effectively with those encountered in the course of the work, including public officials, the general public, and hostile and irate citizens.
18. Ability to work steadily and quickly.
19. Understand and follow instructions, both oral and written.
20. Use sound independent judgment within established procedures and regulations.
21. Regular, reliable, predictable and punctual attendance is an essential function of the position.
22. Compliance with all City of Ravenna city-wide and departmental policies, work rules and procedures.
23. Performs other duties related to those of the position and/or resulting from the needs of the organization as required by Street Superintendent or designee.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Qualifications:
1. Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
2. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Ohio Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class “B” with air brake throughout the term of employment; Class A preferred.
3. Must have knowledge of and skill in the effective and safe operation of large complex departmental automotive equipment in traffic and in and around work crew areas.
4. Must have knowledge of the component parts of such equipment, the performance limits and the preventative maintenance necessary to keep equipment in satisfactory operation.
5. Must have some understanding of construction surveying and interpreting construction drawings and prefer concrete work experience.
6. Must have the ability to keep records such as time spent on a job and the materials used.
7. Must have the ability to work an irregular schedule and under adverse conditions and to respond to emergency and routing call–outs.
8. Must have the ability to lift and carry heavy loads.
9. Must have an appreciation of safety considerations and the need for quality work performance.
10. Ability to interact tactfully and effectively with those encountered in the course of the work, including public officials, the general public and hostile and irate citizens.
11. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with City employees and officials and the general public.
12. Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
13. Ability to work alone or with other personnel.
14. Ability to use sound independent judgment within established procedures and regulations.
15. Ability to work steadily and quickly.
16. Knowledge of basic geographic layout of the City.
17. Strong consideration given to construction and concrete work experience.

Pay Range 14: $24.20 - $30.74
