POSITION SUMMARY:
Typical job duties may include but are not limited to:
- Directs and oversees the activities of the Fire Department.
- Plans, implements, and reviews departmental short and long-range goals.
- Develops general policies for the administration of the department.
- Evaluates needs and makes recommendations for the construction of fire stations and the purchase of apparatus and equipment.
- Prepares annual budgets and controls expenditures.
- Establishes operational standards for the department.
- Responds to alarms and directs activities at the scene of larger fires or incidents.
- Develops recommendations for the protection of life and property in the city.
- Directs administrative functions including planning & personnel administration.
- Handles grievances, maintains departmental discipline and the conduct and general behavior of assigned personnel.
- Meets with elected or appointed officials, other Fire/EMS officials, community and business representatives and the public on all aspects of the departments’ activities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Educational Requirements
· Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science or closely related field preferred.
Experience
· At least Ten (10) years of increasingly responsible experience in a career or combination department of fire or emergency medical service work of which at least four (4) years must have been equivalent a Battalion Chief.
· Thorough knowledge of modern fire suppression, prevention and emergency medical services principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.
· Working knowledge of first aid and resuscitation techniques and their application as demonstrated through state EMT Certification.
· Considerable knowledge of applicable laws, ordinances, departmental standard operating procedures and regulations.
· Ability to train, supervise and develop subordinate personnel.
· Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
· Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.
