Job Description:
This position performs skilled work while coordinating the work of a small crew in the performing of field clerical work reading water meters and assisting with related meter servicing functions.
PAY RANGE:
Crew Leader I: $31,622-$47,433
Crew Leader II: $33,203-$49,805
Crew Leader III: $34,863-$52,295
Job Duties:
Duties include locating and marking existing water and sewer utilities, recording meter readings via operation of a handheld meter reading device. The employee will be responsible for explaining meter readings to citizens and answering questions of a general nature on meter readings. The employee will also clean and replace broken and malfunctioning meters. Other duties of the position include, conducting rereads of meters when complaints of bills being too high or low are received, cutting services on and off and handling other service orders as requested. Employee will assist other public services crews, as needed. Performs related duties as required.
Employee is subject to call back which requires ability to handle water and sewer issues.
Required Qualifications:
Some knowledge of the functional operation of meters. Some knowledge of utility service policies. Some knowledge of water and sewer utility line construction and function. Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public.
- Valid North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications:
Considerable knowledge of street layout and meter locations on assigned routes.
Graduation from high school and some clerical or utility experience. Physical Demands:
Work in this class is described as exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly.
An employee must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, standing, pushing, pulling, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. The employee is subject to environmental conditions outside.
