What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Police Property Technician position at City of Richmond (CA)?
Assistant Police Property Technicians are non-sworn personnel who, under the direction of the Police Property Technician, is responsible for the receipt, security, control, and maintenance of all incoming property and other items of evidence; protecting the integrity of evidence throughout the judicial process, and performing related duties as required. They do not carry firearms, but must not have any restrictions which prevent them from legally owning, possessing, or carrying a firearm. The successful candidate must pass a complete background investigation, which includes a criminal history check for job-related convictions, fingerprinting, a polygraph test, a credit check, and a check of drug use history.
The following list is intended to be illustrative in nature and does not necessarily represent the entire range of work duties expected of employees within the classification. Depending on the assigned area and the specific work of the department, duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Receives property and other items of evidence; logs and stores property and evidence.
- Operates the Police Department computer system for data entry, retrieval and control of property/evidence.
- Releases property/evidence to law enforcement and/or to the courts for investigative purposes or lab analysis; releases property to their prospective owners.
- Assists the Police Property Technician in the determination of items to be destroyed; which are to be retained for charitable contributions; and which are to be auctioned by the City.
- Assists the Police Property Technician in the disposal of firearms, illegal contraband, narcotics, and other obsolete evidence.
- Maintains latent fingerprint cards; logs, stores and develops crime scene photographs.
- Provides court testimony as necessary.
- Assists the Police Property Technician in related duties as required.
Education and Experience: Equivalent to graduation from high school. Experience in storing and maintaining inventory/materials is desirable. Experience in storing and maintaining materials in a highly controlled environment similar to the property and evidence materials maintained in a police department or other law enforcement environment is highly desirable.
Additional Requirements:
- No felony convictions
- Have no restrictions on legally owning, possessing, or carrying a firearm.
- No use of the following drugs within the past three (3) years: Cocaine, Psilocybin (Mushrooms), Hallucinogens, LSD, Heroin, Methamphetamine, MDMA (Ecstasy).
- Successful candidates must pass a thorough background investigation, including a criminal history check for job-related convictions, fingerprinting, polygraph test, credit check, and a check of drug use history.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to work in an office environment and have a range of hearing and vision equal to performing the essential functions of the job. Incumbents will be subject to a variety of fumes, odors, chemicals, and bio-hazardous materials, including blood and bloodborne pathogens, urine, semen, and other soiled evidence. Incumbents must have a range of motion to permit standing, walking, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and lifting up to 50 pounds.

An Employment List will be established, and your placement on this list will be determined solely (100%) by the responses to these supplemental questions. Having all of the minimum qualifications guarantees neither advancement nor placement on the Employment List.Employment List: A ranking of "A" (Best Qualified), "B" (Well Qualified), or "C" (Qualified) is required to achieve a position on the Employment List. This Employment List will be in effect for a maximum of two (2) years; however, the list may be canceled, without notice, after six (6) months.
