What are the responsibilities and job description for the Municipal Attorney position at City of Rochester (NY)?
The City of Rochester is in search of dynamic attorneys who want to work in a collegial environment, tackle novel emerging issues, and have a direct impact on the lives of the residents of and visitors to the City of Rochester. The ideal candidate will have at least five years of experience in one or more of the following practice areas:
Labor and Employment Law: Impact the work of thousands of City employees by advising our Department of Human Resource Management, working directly with our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion team, handling EEOC and NYS Division of Human Rights complaints, and participating in collective bargaining.
Litigation: Protect the rights of the City and its employees through affirmative and defensive litigation in State and federal court. The City handles nearly all litigation in-house. Attorneys regularly appear in the federal district court for the Western District of New York, Monroe County Supreme Court, and Rochester City Court. We take between 2 and 4 cases to trial on average each year, and hold dozens of administrative hearings. Attorneys regularly appear in the Fourth Department, and have the opportunity to argue in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals on occasion.

- Serves as legal counsel to various City departments, City employees acting in an official capacity, and City boards, commissions and City-affiliated entities;
- Represents the City in lawsuits, appeals and administrative hearings brought for or against the City and/or indemnified officers, employees, agents, or groups entitled to defense and indemnification;
- Represents the City in negotiations with a variety of other parties, including vendors, contractors, and labor unions;
- Conducts legal research and renders legal opinions;
- Defends the City against claims and lawsuits brought against it;
- Drafts and reviews all legal documents to which the City is a party;
- Enforces the City's laws by instituting appropriate legal action and carrying the matter through all stages of litigation;
- Performs legal work necessary for the sale and purchase of Real Estate;
- Reviews all legal documents to which the City is a party;
- All other legal work assigned to the incumbent by the Corporation Counsel.
Salary : $89,474 - $138,596
