Fire Cadet Opportunity 

The City of San Bruno, Fire Department offers an exciting opportunity to serve as a Fire Cadet, working alongside San Bruno Firefighters.  The one-year Fire Cadet program is an unpaid, volunteer work experience that offers hands-on training, and introductory knowledge of firefighting skills, fire service tools and equipment.  Cadets respond to emergency calls, render Basic Life Support, and participate in training and in the daily station duties.  
 
The cadet program is one year in length, and cadets must be willing to commit a minimum of 48 hours per month.  Upon completion, this one-year program meets the certification requirement of one year part-time/volunteer work experience for California State Fire Marshal’s Office State Firefighter 2 certification. MINIMUM REQUIREMENT:
 
  • State of California Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or National Registry EMT certification. 
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and a driving record with minimal violations. 
  • Possession of a Firefighter I Academy certification (or proof of “student in good standing” letter signed by an Academy Instructor if currently enrolled). 
  • 18 years of age at the time of application.

  • Maintaining stable performance under pressure or opposition, effectiveness when experiencing changes in responsibilities or environment.
  • Gaining other people’s trust by demonstrating openness and honesty, behaving consistently, and acting in accordance with moral and ethical guidelines.
  • Actively identifying new areas for learning; responding favorably to feedback and using it constructively to take action to improve knowledge, skills, and behavior.
  • Establishing and sustaining trusting relationships by accurately perceiving and interpreting emotions and behavior; leveraging insights to effectively manage own responses.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
 
  • We will review your application and all supplemental materials to select the best qualified applicants to continue in the process. Screening will include a review of minimum qualifications, application appraisal rating of education, training and experience and relevance of background qualifications related to the target job as well as supplemental questions if applicable.
  • Applicants selected to move forward in the process may be asked to participate in any combination of the following (at any phase of the selection process): a written examination, job related exercise, physical test or job simulation, phone interview, in-person or video interview(s), and/or web-based testing.
  • The final phase of the selection process is the probationary period, which in most cases is one year, depending on your classification.
