Positions & Duties
Per the City’s COVID19 Mandatory Vaccination Policy, the City requires all employees starting on or after February 11, 2022, to provide proof of vaccination as a condition of employment absent a documented medical and/or religious exemption. Proof of vaccination means that employees are required to be “up-to-date” with regards to the COVID-19 vaccine. Consistent with the Santa Clara County Public Health Order issued on December 28, 2021, "up-to-date" means that an employee is not only "fully vaccinated," but has also obtained any booster doses of a COVID-19 vaccination for which they are eligible, within 15 days of first becoming eligible.

The San Jose Police Department is currently recruiting for a School Safety Supervisor position. The School Safety Supervisor will be part of the San Jose Police Department's Support Services Division, School Safety & Education Unit. The School Safety and Education Unit provides administrative support and staffing for the Adult Crossing Guard Program for the City of San Jose. Additionally, the Unit coordinates the training and supervision of Student Safety Patrols at elementary schools located throughout the City. The unit comprises of 1 Captain, 1 Program Manager, 4 School Safety Supervisors and nearly 300 School Crossing Guards. The work schedule for this position is a 4/10 schedule (10 hour work days/ 4 days a week).
The duties of this position include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Supervises School Crossing Guards; including recruitment, interview of prospective candidates, training, scheduling, and discipline.
- Administers, schedules, and coordinates the activities of the school crossing guard program, including maintenance of timesheets, mileage forms, performance evaluations, within an assigned geographical area.
- Develops school safety patrol programs; conducts training in safety and advises on current state requirements.
- Designs, prepares, or obtains teaching materials including films, videos, brochures, and testing materials for educational programs in pedestrian safety, bicycle safety, personal safety, and prevention of child sexual assault.
- Works with Police Training and Traffic Operations to develop audio-visual instructional materials including slide and video presentations.
- Prepares and gives presentations to student, parent, and teacher groups in and monitors program effectiveness.
- Prepares and submits timecards for Crossing Guards.
- Observes and reports on unsafe physical conditions of streets, roads, signs, crosswalks, and sidewalks. Makes recommendations on adjustments to matters related to the safety of student pedestrian safety.
- Organizes and directs special events for school-age children.
- May perform duties of a School Crossing Guard on a relief basis, as required.
- Maintains personnel files for School Crossing Guards.
