Department: Solid Waste
Assists with solid waste collection tasks;
- Works as a member of a yard waste or bulk item collection crew to collect refuse, debris, furniture, appliances and yard waste from roadsides;
- Operates pressure washer; applies cleaning chemicals to remove graffiti;
- Sets up traffic control to ensure safety of work zone, special event, and emergency situation;
- Performs preventive maintenance and makes minor repairs to equipment; inspects equipment;
- Uses a variety of hand tools and equipment in performance of tasks, such as chainsaw, weed-eater, edger;
- Adheres to safety policies and procedures;
- May operate tractor mower, knuckleboom, leaf vacuum, and other motorized equipment in solid waste division;
- May assist with snow removal and ice control;
- Performs related tasks as required.
Qualifications
General knowledge of the maintenance, repair and manual tasks of the area assigned; thorough knowledge in the use of common and specialized hand and power tools required in the work; thorough knowledge of the safe use and operation of mechanical equipment required in the work; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates. Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience in maintenance, repair and/or construction. Possession of a valid NC driver’s license and ability to obtain a NC Class “B” within specific time limit set by City of Sanford according to FMCSA requirements. Prefer applicants who already possess CDL Class B or Class A. Successful candidates with Class B or Class A will be compensated at a higher salary.
