Description/Duties & Responsibilities

The City of Santa Clarita is recruiting for a part-time, temporary, seasonal (PTS) Recreation Leader III to support the Youth and Family Programs team. The ideal candidate is a highly motivated individual with strong interpersonal skills who will assist with the planning and implementation of programs, working directly with part-time seasonal staff, youth, and families in seasonal and year-round offerings.

Under the leadership of the Recreation and Community Services Supervisor, this position will work with programs, including Neighborhood Engagement, Teen & Community Court, Youth Employment Services, and other various community events. These programs provide youth and families with a variety of year-round resources, development workshops, employment opportunities, preventative programs, seasonal events, and volunteer opportunities. Other activities include sports, arts and crafts, field trips, water games, and more!

This position is expected to work up to 19 hours a week Monday-Friday from 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m., various shifts and occasional weekends. Actual hours may vary.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists in the planning, organization, and coordination of programming, including Neighborhood Engagement, Community Court, Youth Employment Services, collaborative offerings, seasonal events, and more
  • Supports and guides part-time staff and volunteers during program hours; trains staff on daily job responsibilities and program procedures
  • Schedules and facilitates outreach events and community offerings in varying neighborhoods
  • Schedules Community Court hearings, diversion classes, and participant interviews
  • Builds and maintains relationships with other divisions and stays updated on community-based programs and events
  • Completes and updates various forms, logs, and reports, including participation and inventory; oversees inventory of supplies and informs Supervisor when additional supplies are needed
  • Organizes, prioritizes, and follows-up on work assignments and deadlines
  • Assists in the set-up and clean-up of neighborhood sites, facility rentals, and special events
  • Communicates with staff on program logistic, including site variation, changes and cancellations (i.e. classes, Special Events, presentations, etc.)
  • Addresses issues and concerns with patrons as they arise; informs patrons and program participants of upcoming registrations, changes in programming, and special events
  • Operates City equipment such as bi-fold doors; dividers, scoreboards, etc.)
  • Communicates with parents about minor behavioral issues and minor first aid
  • Ensures staff are following safety guidelines when supervising youth, including covering ratio and scanning the perimeter
  • Reports incidents and accidents to Supervisor
  • Attends meetings and trainings session as needed
  • Responds to emergencies as needed
  • Performs other duties as directed by the Recreation and Community Services Supervisor

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED or equivalent
  • Two years of experience working with youth in an after-school program setting, toddlers, teens, camps, recreation, education, or other relatable setting
  • Bilingual in Spanish/English is highly desirable
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within one month of hire, Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED/First Aid
  • A combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered

  • Ability to work with other staff effectively to provide quality recreational programs for youth participating in neighborhood programs, seasonal events, and camps
  • Positive, team-oriented, self-motivated, and enthusiastic
  • Excellent customer service including patience and good listening skills
  • Excellent communication and follow-up skills
  • Positive attitude in working with youth
  • Ability to juggle numerous responsibilities and tasks
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and exhibit good judgement skills in difficult situations
  • Creative problem-solving as it relates to working with children
  • Ability to lift, drag, and push files and equipment weighting 25 pounds or more

As a City of Santa Clarita public employee, you may be called upon to work as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW) in the event of an emergency (in accordance with Government Code §§ 3100-3109). Before entering upon the duties of employment, all public employees, except those excluded by law, take and subscribe to an oath or affirmation set forth in the California Constitution, declaring them to be Disaster Service Workers in time of need.

In compliance with California law, positions working with children are required to be mandated child abuse reporters. A mandated reporter is an individual who is obligated by law to report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.

In addition, part-time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) employees may be required to participate in the DMV Employer Pull-Notice Program. This program authorizes the City to receive a driver record report upon enrollment and during employment.

PTS workers are at-will. Generally, PTS employees are limited to no more than 999 hours.
