Under direct supervision of the Capital Improvement Manager or a Senior Civil Engineer, prepares exhibits, maps, drawings, and detailed construction plans from engineer's preliminary designs using mechanical and computer aided drafting equipment.
FLSA status: Non-Exempt.

Prepares preliminary designs and designs detailed construction plans. Coordinates designs and lay-out; and prepares a variety of graphics, charts, banners, and certificates for all City departments. Files and maintains archives of subdivision improvement plans, construction plans and computer drawing files of City projects; provides large scale reproduction services to the public, City staff, contractors, and consultants; updates various City base maps as new roads, subdivisions, sewer systems, and other significant changes made within the City limits and adjacent properties; maintains and manipulates digital aerial photos. Review and development of legal descriptions needed for easements and/or property.
Performs a variety of related or assigned office and field tasks in gathering and recording data needed to render accurate drawings; provides information to the public, contractors, and consultants relative to sewer, street, and civil engineering infrastructure and technical matters, transmits drawings, documents, and files to contractors, consultants, the public, and other agencies.
Knowledge of:
- AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, and various other software.
- Legal documents, property/easement research, and maps
- Civil engineering and architectural, designs, standards, terminology, methods, and practices.
- Arithmetic, Algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and curve data tables and their application to the computation of distances, angles, areas, and traverses.
- Equipment, materials, tools, and their application to civil engineering drafting, (e.g., scales, triangles, protractors, scanners, plotters, CADD workstation, storage media/devices).
- Complex drafting methods and techniques.
- Drafting disciplines (e.g. structural, civil, and architectural), nomenclature/terms (e.g. section, details, enlargement and elevations), and symbols (e.g. wood, steel, concrete, & flow-lines) used in different types of drawings.
- The characteristics of various reproduction processes and features such as reduction, enlargement, reproduction quality, and dimensional stability.
- Potential problem areas in construction as relating to details appearing in diagrams, schematics, and plans, in order to notify engineers, avoid construction errors, and correct drawings.
- Reads and examines plans, profiles, and map data in order to compute area drawing calculations and provide printed documents using a computer.
Skill in:
- Performing technical drafting work, using AutoCAD 2018, AutoCAD Civil 3D, Avec, and ArcGIS.
- Incorporating and interpreting CAD Files containing survey data.
- Ability to draw design plans, cross-sections and profiles of streets, storm drains, sewers, sewage treatment plants, bridges, buildings, runways, airport lighting systems, street lighting systems, water systems, power systems, retaining walls and earthwork, using computer graphics software (e.g., CADD).
- Ability to interpret design plans, charts, graphs and tables of streets, storm drains, sewers, sewage treatment plants, bridges, buildings, runways, airport lighting systems, street lighting systems, power systems, water systems, retaining walls and earthwork for the interpretation and production of projects.
- Ability to gather, read, and interpret various technical documents such as legal property descriptions (e.g., title information, easement, private streets and tracts), schematics, plans, and specifications relating to the construction, alteration, and repair of various utilities and public works improvements (e.g., buildings, bridges, roadways, sewers and waterways).
- Drawing maps and cartographic illustrations, using AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, Avec, and ArcGIS.
- The methods and techniques of research and evaluation of the types and sources of records available for researching land, zoning, and title information.
- Communicating effectively, orally and in writing.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with City staff and the public.
High school diploma or GED.
Two (2) years training in computer aided drafting from a trade school or college plus one (1) year of technical engineering computer aided drafting experience in civil design.
Experience with mechanical (board) drafting preferred.
Associate degree preferred.
Written Exam passing score 70%
