SUMMARY
The incumbent is responsible for assisting Linemen, Journeyman while learning all areas of maintenance, construction, repair and operational tasks on electrical power lines, transformers, etc. in order to keep electrical service in good working condition.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Completes class work, correspondence course work, and field training in each of the apprenticeship steps. Learns skills such as pole climbing, transformer bank configurations, and general line maintenance and construction.
  • Assists Lineman in changing out service lines, re-fusing transformers and (occasionally) changing taps on transformers.
  • Uses power winches, booms, reels, and pole hole diggers. Constructs new lines where necessary, including setting and framing the poles and stringing conductor wire.
  • Operates line trucks for Journeyman Lineman in the repair, maintenance, and construction of electrical line and transformers.
  • Installs, removes, or maintains streetlight fixtures, poles, and control equipment.
  • Strings wire of various gauges on poles and structures.
  • Installs underground cable, splices, and connectors, along with other material; in the maintenance, construction, repair, and operational tasks.
  • Will be required to work after normal working hours in case of power outages, as well as required to share in the standby rotation as determined by the Superintendent.
  • Other duties may be assigned as needed

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position required limited supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the City’s policies and applicable laws.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); a minimum of one year as a Groundman is necessary before a person qualifies for this position.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Must hold a valid driver’s license. Ability to obtain a Class A or B commercial driver’s (CDL) license

  • Weather Essential position includes employees are declared to be all sworn police officers, all sworn firefighters, dispatchers, emergency road crew employees in the Street Department, and electrical personnel in the Electric Department.
