What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Worker II position at City of St. Petersburg?

This is semi-skilled manual work performing landscaping and maintenance of city-owned property including medians and rights of way including in or near waterways, ditches, and lakes. This work requires the application of skills and knowledge above the basic laboring level in the maintenance of sidewalks, curbs, other paved areas; maintenance of grounds and turf through mowing and edging; trimming and pruning of plants, trees and shrubs; and the pickup of litter. Work also involves assisting with landscaping projects, including the planting, removing and care of various turfs, ground covers, plants, flowers, shrubs and trees; the operation of light trucks, dump trucks, and light-duty automotive equipment; helping with CCTV setups with aquatics crews in lake management activities; small pavement construction tools, equipment, and specialized machines including concrete saws and tampers; small turf equipment, such as chain saws, trimmers, and mowers; and other related storm water, pavement, and traffic operations construction tools. An employee in this class performs heavy manual labor, occasionally under adverse weather conditions.

Salary: $17.04 - $22.92 Hourly

To Qualify


Minimum Qualifications. Applicants must:

  • Possess and maintain a valid Driver License.
  • Have at least six (6) months of experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, pavement construction, pavement maintenance, or a related field.
  • Have some experience operating small turf maintenance equipment and/or pavement construction and pavement maintenance.
  • Be able to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time, sometimes under unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Be able to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Acknowledge this position is designated as Emergency Critical (EC) and if hired into the position, you must be immediately available to the department before, during, and after a declared emergency and/or disaster.

Desirable Qualifications. Preferred applicants:

  • Possess a valid high school diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Have some basic supervisory experience.
  • Have some computer knowledge.


RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT

The successful candidate must be either a resident of the City of St. Petersburg as of his or her date of employment, or establish primary residency within the city limits of St. Petersburg within six months of completing the probationary period. Furthermore, as long as the successful candidate is employed in this classification, he or she must reside within the city limits of St. Petersburg. This requirement is not applicable to current City employees who were hired before October 20, 1997.
