City of Sterling Heights full time employees and their dependents who are enrolled on the City's health coverage have access to a health and wellness center staffed with a physician and nurse.
Position Summary
Under the supervision of a Division Supervisor performs unskilled manual tasks to assist in repairing and maintaining this city's sewer and water system, streets, parks and grounds. This individual will operate a variety of City vehicles and equipment to perform job duties.
Position Responsibilities
- Loads and unloads vehicles with a variety of materials, equipment or tools used for repairs or transported for use or storage at another location.
- Replace sod and/or seed, earth grading, tears apart broken bricks or blocks, breaks and removes concrete with jackhammer or other tools to build or rebuild existing structures.
- Masonry work to include concrete or mortar, laying of brick or block, pours and finishes concrete.
- Set up pumps and maintain operations during flood conditions.
- Assists in cleaning of sanitary and storm lines with high-pressure jet.
- Acts as flagman for traffic control during road maintenance and construction for safety of public and employees.
- Dig holes, pounds posts, assists in erecting signs, barricades and temporary fencing.
- Invasive species control utilizing a variety of equipment up to industrial type tractors.
- Assists in using vacuum type unit to clean catch basins, manholes and culverts.
- Applied hot and cold asphalt material on City roadways to repair cracks and holes.
- Plants, trims, removes trees, and performs litter control on street and City rights-of-way.
- Snow and ice removal from crosswalks and City sites.
- Performs any other manual tasks as assigned.
- Drives all single axle vehicles including, but not limited to, pick-up trucks, flat beds, lift gate stake trucks, dump trucks, etc. Operates City vehicles for snow removal.
Minimum Requirements
- High school graduate or GED equivalent
- Ability to perform essential job functions as listed in the position summary.
- Must possess a valid unrestricted Michigan Driver's License and have a good driving record.
- A Group B State of Michigan Commercial Driver's License with Air Brakes endorsement is required at time of appointment
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
