NATURE OF WORK
This classification involves installing, maintaining, and repairing irrigation systems for the City. An employee in this position installs and repairs irrigation systems; determines work methods as to parts, tools, and tests; interprets blueprints, sketches, or diagrams; complies with job specifications and codes; replaces wiring as needed; and sets up MOT for roadway safety. This position also performs backflow certifications and stocks trucks with related parts.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Installs irrigation systems including pumps, pressure tanks, sprinklers, sprinkler controls, and connectors.
- Reads work orders to ascertain the type of system to be installed, installation location, and operating specifications; reads and interprets blueprints, sketches, and diagrams; and prepares estimates of time and materials required for sprinkler assignments.
- Assigns tasks to various skilled and unskilled helpers assisting in various phases of sprinkler worker; observes established safety practices and procedures.
- Installs water pipe and sprinkler heads using pipe wrenches and couplings; cuts pipe using hacksaw, pipe cutters, hammer and chisel, cutting torch, and pipe cutting machine; bends pipe by hand or with pipe bending machine; and joins piping by means of threaded, caulked, wiped, soldered, brazed, fused, or cemented joints.
- Activates sprinkler system and observes operations to verify volume of water, specified distribution, and synchronization.
- Checks time clock to make sure pumps are primed.
- Replaces defective water lines, sprinkler heads, and structural members.
- Operates trencher when doing installs or revamps of sprinkler systems.
- Uses pipe threader, tube cutters, welding equipment, and hand tools.
- Tests and replaces electrical wiring and components of electrical pumps and test meter; uses wire strippers and soldering equipment.
- Sets up MOT for roadway safety when applicable.
- Performs backflow repairs and certifications.
- Stocks trucks with parts.
- Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION
- Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of GED equivalency diploma.
- PROOF OF HIGHEST LEVEL OF COMPLETED EDUCATION MUST BE SUBMITTED AS AN ATTACHMENT WITH APPLICATION. (Applications without attached proof of education will not be processed for consideration)
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
- Must possess three (3) years of progressive experience in the sprinkler trade (including installation, maintenance and repair)
- Completion of an approved training course strongly preferred
NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Must possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Must obtain a valid Florida driver’s license prior to hire.
- Registrations desired: Irrigation Technician Certificate; Backflow Certification; MOT Intermediate Certificate; and Licenses for turf, ornamental, and right-of-way pest control spray.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work Environment
- Tasks are regularly performed outdoors with potential exposure to the following conditions: varying temperatures, inclement weather, and/or other adverse conditions.

- The ability to perceive and differentiate visual cues or signals. Tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing. Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through personal contact, the use of the telephone and/or other City-issued technology devices.
Physical
- Physical capability to effectively use and operate City assigned vehicles, golf carts, and manual or power tools
- Sufficient physical strength and agility to do manual labor, occasionally under adverse weather conditions
- Ability to climb, balance, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push and/or pull, twist and make repetitive hand movements
- Ability to walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods of time
- Ability to load, carry, lift, push and/or pull objects weighing up to 30 pounds
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools. and materials of the sprinkler trade.
- Knowledge of the flows, pressures, and capacities of water systems and lines.
- Knowledge of applicable local codes effective in the City.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the sprinkler trade.
- Knowledge of blueprints and sprinkler diagrams.
- Skill in the care and use of standard tools, equipment. and testing devices of the sprinkler trade.
- Skill in the diagnosis of sprinkler malfunctions.
- Skill in the sprinkler trade.
- Skill in using department software.
- Ability to install, repair, and maintain sprinkler systems, fixtures, and accessories.
- Ability to locate defects in sprinkler fixtures, systems, fixtures, and equipment.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and diagrams.
- Ability to prepare time and material estimates for sprinkler assignments.
- Ability to have enough physical strength and agility to sufficiently perform duties.
