The City of Tacoma, Public Works Fleet Services Division, is recruiting for the position of Fleet Services Parts Technician.
As part of Facilities Management, Fleet Services supports the City of Tacoma's transportation requirements by managing a safe, efficient, cost effective diversified fleet of vehicles and construction equipment, including solid waste and landfill equipment.
Fleet Services maintain two efficient maintenance shops:
- The Fleet Operations facility is the maintenance shop for the City's vehicles and equipment.
- The Fleet Annex shop, located at the City's solid waste facility, maintains the heavy-duty refuse fleet.
Fleet Services Parts Technicians locate and procure parts and services for Fleet Services, assuring that the items meet predetermined specifications and standards; maintain workable inventory levels for Fleet Services storeroom.

Essential Duties:
- Locate and procure parts and services for the City of Tacoma Fleet Services storeroom and fleet equipment; contact local vendors and compare price, availability and quality of merchandise.
- Initiate and process orders for parts and services; maintain adequate levels of inventory; establish stock levels and reorder parts.
- Inspect received items for damage or defects; accept or reject goods according to established guidelines.
- Determine future fleet parts inventory and maintain perpetual inventory system; provide inventory control information to the Manager and Accounting as required.
- Process special orders for parts or single source items as needed.
- Compile and maintain records and reports including purchasing history of stock items.
- Train and provide work direction to assigned personnel.
- Oversee the maintenance of the storeroom to assure a clean, orderly and secure operation.
- Issue requested parts to Fleet Service personnel; prepare and maintain various lists.
- Locate and procure various parts and supplies for other City of Tacoma departments as required and authorized.
- Maintain a computerized inventory control program. Perform related duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Fleet services environment; subject to noise and fumes.
Work Shifts vary: Monday – Friday day shift and Monday – Friday swing shift. Occasional overtime, Saturday work, and holiday work required.
Offices are closed Christmas, New Years, Thanksgiving, and Fourth of July.

Graduation from high school
AND
Two (2) years of experience involving inventory control and purchase of parts and supplies in an automotive or distribution facility.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
A valid Washington State driver's license

Examination Process:
This is a competitive selection process. Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will have Supplemental Questions #7-10 scored as the Experience and Training Test for this position. Applicants must pass with a minimum score of 70% or higher in order to be placed on the Eligible List for interview and hiring consideration.
Per City of Tacoma Personnel Management Policy #170, the City of Tacoma is a drug-free work environment. Appointment is subject to successful completion of a background check, pre-employment medical exam including drug screen, and a physical ability test.
This position is covered by a Labor Agreement between the City of Tacoma and Local Union 120 WSCCCE. New employees must successfully complete a nine-month probationary period prior to obtaining permanent status in this classification.
