We are seeking a customer service-oriented individual with the competence and experience to address challenges with confidence and professionalism. The Plan Check Assistant performs a range of duties in reviewing and checking building construction plans (residential, commercial, and industrial) for compliance with all applicable State and City codes.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Review construction plans for additions, alterations, repairs, and other projects to ensure compliance with all applicable codes and ordinances
- Respond to inquiries from, and provide information to architects, engineers, contractors, building designers, owners, and the general public regarding project status, plan checking, and other code code-related issues
- Provide assistance at the public service counter (over-the-counter plan checking, code questions, and permit issuance)
- Perform routine engineering analysis and calculations.
- Approve over-the-counter plan revisions to issued permits.
Ideal Candidate:
- Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, and civil engineering plans to ensure conformance with building code standards, and other related regulations
- Outstanding customer service and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with external and internal partners
- Problem solving, and decision-making skills
- Knowledge of routine engineering procedures, terminology, and principles related to structural components of buildings and structures
- Equivalent to a high school diploma, with specialized vocational or college level coursework in construction technology, architecture, engineering, or related field
- 2 years technical experience in construction plan checking, building inspection, or a related field
- An ICC certification as a Plans Examiner and/or Combination Building Inspector. If not already acquired, this certification must be obtained within one year of employment.
- A valid California Class C driver’s license
