What are the responsibilities and job description for the Traffic Engineering Intern position at City of Tyler?
The City of Tyler is seeking an Engineering Intern. This is a part-time, paid internship opportunity. Must be available to work 10-12 hours per week. Flexible work schedule allowed, as authorized by supervisor. The starting salary is $12.00 per hour depending on experience. Must have reliable transportation.
Under Supervision, assist City Traffic Engineer and Technicians to conduct warrant analysis for traffic control devices, accident history, and other traffic-related studies. Perform other related work as required.
- Gain an understanding of various data required to conduct various traffic studies along with some methods by which to obtain this data.
- Learn about and conduct various traffic studies that a traffic engineer may be required to complete.
- Learn about traffic signal phasing and operations including various calculations related to signal timing as well traffic signal technology.
- Work independently to collect, analyze, and evaluate traffic data.
- Collect and analyze data for collision diagrams, speed limit and stop signs, traffic signals, and other traffic control devices.
- Enter data into computer databases, spreadsheets, and signal system and transportation related programs.
- Prepare compute and/or manual graphics and drawings.
- Assist in design and implementation of traffic-related improvements and signal progression plans.
- Compile and maintain compute inventory of traffic records, technical reports, technical drawings, and other documentation.
- Conduct inventory of traffic controls in need of routine maintenance throughout the city’s street network, including signs, pavement markings, and traffic signals.
- Drive to multiple locations to review and evaluate lanes closed by construction, perform traffic counts and field equipment inventories.
- Assist in traffic sign inventory and data entry as necessary.
- Communicate courteously and effectively with other city employees, supervisors, officials and the public.
- Sit, stand, and/or walk for long periods of time surveying and maintaining traffic equipment.
- Walk and carry, drag, hold, lift, pull, and/or push up to 50 pounds of equipment; climb, crawl, drive, kneel, square, stoop, and/or twist in installing and maintain traffic equipment.
- See and hear well enough to work safely in traffic and construction situations, with appropriate safety precautions.
- Work indoors and outdoors including in adverse weather conditions such as extreme cold and heat, temperature swings, and in noise.
- May assist in other departmental functions related to traffic and transportation, including answer telephones, operate copy machines and other office equipment.
Education and Experience: Must be a college student at the undergraduate or graduate level in an approved engineering curriculum; transportation and engineering courses preferred. Must have a valid Texas Class "C" Driver's License.
