JOB SUMMARY
The Community Appearance Worker performs skilled and semi-skilled maintenance duties related to the beautification of right-of-way and other designated areas and facilities within the City of Victoria. Work is typically performed independently under general supervision of a Crew Leader or Manager.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prides themselves in the beautification of the community.
- Performs skilled and semi-skilled maintenance of grassy areas, shrubs, trees, plants, and other associated landscape areas by using ground maintenance equipment and tools.
- Performs semi-skilled curbside maintenance such as but not limited to irrigation and chemical applications.
- Performs regular large debris pick-up on vacant lots as needed.
- Maintains and performs preventive maintenance on tools and equipment.
- Ability to identify problems and offer solutions.
- Directs traffic when necessary.
- Completes forms, logs and other paperwork as needed.
- Current work schedule is four 10 hour days per week, and requires flexibility to work hours outside of this including weekends and holidays as needed.
- Provides quality customer service and possess a team-oriented mindset.
- Performs duties in a safe and orderly manner, complying with all City and department safety rules.
- Performs related duties as required or assigned.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Employee will work in seasonal temperatures. Employee will bend, kneel, twist, climb, squat, and stoop while performing duties. Employee will frequently lift up to 50 pounds. Any weight exceeding 50 pounds will be a two man lift per department policy. Ability to push/pull a maximum weight of 150 pounds. Employee will be exposed to dirt, dust, water, mud, noises, fumes, litter, debris, and odors. Employee may also be exposed to potential mechanical, chemical, electrical, fire and traffic hazards while operating maintenance equipment.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines:
- Minimum 8th grade education required. High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Some previous landscape or lawn maintenance experience preferred, OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Knowledge of:
- General knowledge of work hazards and applicable safety precautions.
- Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
- Customer service principles, practices, and etiquette.
- Chemical pesticide and herbicide application, use and storage practices and procedures.
- Basic tool and equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Working independently and part of a team.
- Interacting tactfully and professionally with City staff, outside agencies, and the public.
- Organizing work and setting priorities to meet deadlines.
- Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
- General knowledge of mowers, weed trimmers, edger's, blowers, and general landscaping tools. Additionally, knowledge of any of the following is preferred:
- Tractor
- Tree trimmer and removal equipment
- Tractor with attachments
- Truck with trailer
- Irrigation systems and equipment
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Valid Texas driver’s license with driving record that meets City guidelines
- If assigned to chemical applications, have the ability to obtain TDA non-commercial political pesticide applicators license.
