Join Our Team as a Custodial Worker I with the City of Virginia Beach! We are hiring dedicated Custodial Worker I to help maintain the cleanliness and functionality of our facilities.
Duties and position expectations include:
- Satisfactorily clean the area you are assigned each day.
- Correct, in a timely manner, any issues presented to you on an inspection report or verbally from anyone in your chain of supervision.
- Treat your co-workers and supervisors with respect.
- Drive a City owned vehicle to deliver supplies to facilities, lifting 50 lbs.
- Vacuum and extract carpet using an industrial type vacuum to remove dirt and debris from the nap of the carpet
- Clean, buff, strip, and wax resilient floors (terrazzo tile, VCT, Ceramic, etc.) to remove dirt, debris and residue. Cleaning involves, sweeping, mopping, scrubbing.
- Dust furniture, file cabinets, shelves, woodwork, and similar items, with a treated cloth to remove dust
- Wash windows, sills, blinds, etc., to remove dirt and dust
- Empty trash and recycle material, removing it from the facility to outside receptacle or dumpster.
- Clean rest room fixtures, walls and floors with a germicidal disinfectant to remove bacterial germs and odors
- Polish furniture and brass with a treated cloth and polish to create a glossy, non-oily appearance
- Clean vents, light fixtures, and other high areas. May require use of a ladder.
- Open and unlock city buildings before working hours
- Set-up and ensure meeting areas are properly prepared for scheduled events.
- Any other duties as assigned by your Supervisor.
Please Note: Assignments will be determined daily based on workload and departmental needs, so flexibility and adaptability are key. The Custodial Worker will not be assigned a permanent location. Although staff is likely be assigned to the same area for most days, there will be times when staff members are reassigned to other locations or asked to help with additional duties.
In this role you will be expected to be available outside of your assigned hours as needed and report to work during emergencies, in accordance with City Policy for Alpha 1 - Essential Personnel.
