What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Safety Training Specialist position at City of Virginia Beach?
The Virginia Beach Fire Department is looking for a dedicated Fire and Life Safety Education Specialist to develop and enhance crucial programs that educate diverse groups across our city. From evaluating program effectiveness to creating innovative safety materials, you'll play a pivotal role in promoting fire prevention and safety initiatives. Develop and revise specific fire and life safety education programs to relate to the needs of diverse groups within Virginia Beach.
- Evaluate programs to ensure quality of program content, technique, and relevancy that communicate and reinforce key lessons in fire safety and prevention initiatives and programs.
- Design and implement production of innovative fire and life safety materials to be used in formulating class themes; establish a reference center for the collection of available fire and injury prevention materials and program outlines to distribute them to requesting groups; and maintain knowledge of fire prevention and promotion research through professional training, participation in conferences, and continuing education.
- Conduct fire and life safety displays and presentations to promote community awareness of fire and injury prevention.
- Teach and deliver instruction to groups within the general public through classroom lessons, speeches, and demonstrations to inform them of principles of fire safety; provide educational outreach to civilian networks, community volunteers, and community agencies to enable these groups to gain adequate knowledge of fire and life safety techniques in order to enhance their own program; and provide training on fire and life safety education to department personnel so that they will be aware of the program and refer groups or individuals to it.
- Interview and advise juvenile fire-setters and their families to provide educational intervention and refer to appropriate mental health counselors and other community resources if necessary.
- Conduct research to target populations needing specialized programs; compile data and monitor statistical figures to have a general knowledge of community's awareness of the fire and injury problem in their area and the knowledge of their own fire and life safety needs.
- Provide car seat installation assistance and education to citizens as a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician.
- Serve on various committees to represent the Fire and Life Safety Education Office and the Virginia Beach Fire Department.
- Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on then current workloads and department needs.
