Mechanic

The City of Waukesha is an award winning, growing community located along the shores of the Fox River, 15 miles west of Milwaukee. The City is the 7th largest in the state with a population of close to 72,000 people and was included in Money Magazine's 100 Best places to live in 2019.

This position is responsible for performing skilled maintenance and repair work on City fleet vehicles and equipment.

Schedule: M-F, 7am-330pm, Required occasional nights and weekends for emergencies and business needs
Starting salary: Depending on qualifications, $50,743-64,094

Essential Duties:

• Performs regular maintenance and repairs on all fleet vehicles and equipment used by the Department on a daily basis; diagnoses problems and makes necessary adjustments and repairs.
• Perform welding and fabrication as needed on the equipment and trailers.
• Performs repairs on park shelters and pool facilities as needed.
• Specifies orders and picks up or arranges delivery of most repair parts and supplies as needed.
• Repairs tires, tubes and wheel rims as needed; specifies and orders all replacement tires and replacement supplies as needed.
• Keeps accurate maintenance and repair records.
• Assists in snow removal operations; maintains snow removal equipment.
• Addresses questions and issues regarding warranty work, vendor quotes and repairs.
• Daily use of computers, the Internet, smart phone or other device with the ability to create a database, spreadsheets and reports using the faster fleet maintenance program.
• Assists supervisor and management in specifications and ordering of fleet equipment.

Typical Qualifications

Graduation from high school plus 2 years of additional technical training in automotive mechanics or a closely related field, and at least 5 years of experience in servicing and maintaining vehicles and other equipment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, ability and skills:

Knowledge of

• The practices, tools, equipment and materials used in automotive mechanics.
• Preventative maintenance techniques and practices.
• Operational hazards and safety practices and techniques to avoid or minimize risks.

• Diagnose and solve mechanical problems on a variety of vehicles and equipment.
• Perform skilled maintenance and repair of diverse vehicles and equipment.
• Utilize the proper tools and equipment in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment.
• Use the appropriate vehicle and mechanics manuals and read and interpret instructions and diagrams.
• Prepare requisite service and activity records.
• Employ precautionary measures and utilize safe work methods.
• Multi-task and prioritize workload.
• Work independently with minimal supervision.
• Operate a fork lift and other heavy machinery and equipment.
• Perform light to heavy physical tasks under varying weather conditions.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers and the general public.
• Perform mobile and "on the road" diagnosis and repairs to cars, trucks, trailers and various other equipment.

• Mechanical diagnosis and repairs.
• Ability to maintain and service a multitude of vehicles from cars and vans, to mowers and tractors, to loaders and dump trucks to implements and small engines.
• The use, operation, and care of tools and equipment utilized in vehicle maintenance and repairs.

• CDL License (Class ABCD, Endorsement N); valid Wisconsin driver's license
• Parts Specialist;
• Master ASE Certified Automotive Mechanic;
• ASE Certified Heavy Duty Diesel Engines;
• Must provide own hand tools.

• Work is performed in the office and field; hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, prolonged visual concentration, and the ability to adjust focus.
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk and hear; use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.
• The employee is frequently required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, or crawl.
• The employee must frequently lift and/or move up in excess of 50 pounds.
• The position involves exposure to adverse weather and other unpleasant conditions, including heat, cold, wetness and humidity, dust, odors, noise, toxic agents, smoke and electrical currents.
