ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN

Definition:  Under supervision of a Division Supervisor/Superintendent, assists in the development and completion of specified public works project(s) by providing technical assistance in surveying, property layout, construction line layout, mapmaking and technical drawing.

Tasks:

Reviews drawings, updates and maintains City drawings based upon changes required.  Draws various maps from field notes/inspections.  Coordinate and integrate all pertinent information impacting the design and construction of the project.  Updates maps and drawings to reflect completed construction.

Responds to general questions from the public.  Compiles various reports.  Inspects new water and sewer lines and new service taps.  Assists with maintenance and repairs of water and sewer lines.  Maintains maps, drawings and records in an orderly and assessable manner.  Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Other Characteristics:

• Knowledge of the methods and techniques of drafting.
• Knowledge of surveying methods and techniques.
• Knowledge of specific regulations to area of assignment.
• Knowledge of principles and practices of civil engineering.
• Knowledge of applicable City policies, laws, and regulations affecting Department activities.
• Skill in mechanical drawing, mapmaking, and surveying and in the use of drafting and surveying tools, instruments and equipment.
• Skill in identifying and maintaining the confidentiality of sensitive and important information while using diplomacy and tact.
• Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisor, and the general public.

Mental and Physical Abilities: Mental work efforts involve periods of close attention to detail while working on drawings, plans and schematics.  Physical requirements include standing, bending, twisting, sitting and moving moderate (25-50 lbs.) materials on occasion.

Working Conditions:   Work involves a normal office environment with frequent travel to work sites which could include adverse weather, dust, loud noises and exposure to normal construction hazards.

Qualifications

Qualifications: Three (3) years of experience performing a variety of tasks and assignments as an engineering aide or closely related area.  An equivalent combination of education and experience which indicates possession of the knowledge, skills and other characteristics may be substituted for the above qualifications.  An Associate’s Degree is preferred. Must possess a valid driver’s license.  May be required to secure certifications as required by area of assignment.

* An Engineering Aide meeting the above qualifications will be automatically promoted to the Engineering Technician classification after three (3) years in the department.
