Summary: The Youth Services Coordinator empowers and motivates young people. They oversee and coordinate services, programs, and collections for children and young adults. Responsibilities include planning, organizing, implementing, and maintaining programs, developing youth collections, publicizing events, and presenting programs.

Supervision Received: Library Director

Essential Job Functions:
  1. Plans, develops, and implements children’s and family programs and activities for newborns through seventeen years old including story times, summer programs, and special events, etc. which include researching possible programs, contacting performers/experts, and overseeing scheduling and contracts.
  2. Introduces literature and early literacy skill development through regular story time programs for babies, toddlers and preschool-age children and designs and prepares crafts to complement story times.
  1. Plans and presents for class visits, tours, and other specialized programs for preschool and school-age youth.
  2. Engages in outreach to develop partnerships with schools, daycares, preschools, homeschool groups and other community organizations and agencies that serve children and their caregivers.
  3. Evaluates and selects youth print, audio, and video items for purchase or replacement.
  4. Reevaluates and deselects youth materials which need to be cancelled, repaired, replaced, or removed from the collection.
  5. Monitors shelves in children’s and young adult area, straightening and filling displays and shelving as needed.
  6. Maintains children’s circulation desk, providing copies of story time schedules, special events, recommended reading lists, etc.
  1. Demonstrates desire to further professional knowledge through attendance at various programs for children and young adults. Desires to develop self-potential in professional specialty.
  1. Submits required reports and budget requests.
  2. Serves on library committees and attends applicable meetings.
  3. Assists with system-wide programs, activities, and initiatives.
  4. Utilizes effective public relations techniques and media contacts to publicize library activities.  
  1. Assists in development of library policies and regulations which affect areas of work responsibility.
  2. Works well in a team to ensure smooth overall library operation.
  3. Keeps informed of developments within the library, community and library profession which may affect the library services to the public.
  4. Provides leadership within the library through advocacy and collaboration, working closely with the young adult programmer.  
  5. Participates in the library’s planning process to represent and support youth services. Sets goals and establishes priorities.  
  6. Fulfills all duties at the library circulation desk as scheduled, including opening and closing library.
  7. Must be able to work rotating weekends and evenings. 
  8. Other duties as assigned.  

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Science from an accredited institution is preferred. Two years of post-secondary education, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Experience:  Two years related experience OR any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  1. Demonstrates imagination and initiative.
  2. Visible aptitude for working with children and young adults and dealing effectively with people of all ages.
  3. Ability to prioritize job responsibilities and work independently.
  4. Knowledge of the policies and regulations which govern the library.
  5. Ability to direct all functions related to youth services.
  6. Ability to program successfully for children and young adults.
  7. Familiarity with e-readers, mobile devices, and library databases; Interested in books and literature.  
  8. Ability to work with other professionals and staff to secure the fullest use of the library by the public.

Qualifications: Knowledge of children’s literature.  Experience performing children’s programming.  Experience working in a library setting.  Familiarity with books and other library resources.  Knowledge of software applications, social media, and emerging technology as it applies to children, young adults, adults, and the community.  Ability to communicate effectively with all members of the public, including children, in a courteous and tactful manner, both verbally and in writing.  Exceptional interpersonal communication, problem-solving, customer relations, and teamwork skills.  

Physical Demands: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull up to 25 pounds; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other locations using various modes of private and commercial transportation; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Work Environment:  Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment with extensive public contact and frequent interruptions.
