JOB SUMMARY: Under general direction, is responsible for performing veterinarian services at the Animal Services Center. Performs examinations on animals brought into the animal services facility; vaccinates all animals leaving the facility; performs spay and neuter surgeries; and prescribes euthanasia for badly injured or sick animals. Advises citizens on rabies control procedures and works directly with animal bite victims and their physicians.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Administers the rabies control program; Vaccinates all animals not currently vaccinated against rabies prior to their release when vaccination is appropriate and certifies all animals released from quarantine observation as being free from rabies; Advises victims of animal bites and the correct procedures to follow to insure their personalsafety.
2. Providesstafftrainingrelevanttoanimalhusbandry,humaneanimalhandling,sanitationanddiseasecontrol,basic animal behavior, medical care, surgical support (intake and discharge) and first aid for animals; Assists in the training, evaluating, and performance of proper euthanasia of animals by injection; Examines all impounded animals and prescribes euthanasia for sick or injured animals. Ability to develop curriculum and a training course in order train staff to become Certified Euthanasia Technicians in accordance with the Texas Health and Safety Code. Performs autopsy of animals.
3. Establishes and implements written medical treatment protocols. Ability to interpret local ordinances, statutes, rules, regulations, and city policies pertaining to animal care and control. Ability to respond to public inquiries from the public and City Officials; Assist in resolving complaints in an efficient and timelymanner.
4. Provideshighqualitysterilizationsurgeryforadoptedanimalpopulationcontrolinafast-pacedshelterenvironment. Provides routine veterinary care to include triage, physical exams, emergency medical care, stabilization, diagnosis and treatment of ill and injured animals, minor surgery, vaccinations,testing.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
5. Receiveanimalrecordsfromstaff;inputanimalrecorddispositionsintocomputer;preparemonthly and weekly reports according to establishedguidelines.
6. Requisition and control euthanasia drugs and equipment; ensure proper utilization of supplies and equipment in accordance with all applicable state and federal regulations and laws. Ability to stay abreast of new trends and innovations in animalsheltering.
