About CivAI:

CivAI is a non-profit that educates the public about AI's capabilities and dangers using live software demonstrations. To date, CivAI has delivered 100 briefings to organizations across civil society (on AI-cyber risks, deepfakes, and elder fraud) and the US government (on biological risks, elections, and more). Its work has been featured on national television by ABC News and FOX, and in print by the New York Times, the Washington Post, TIME, CNN, and many others.

About the role:

As a creative, generalist software engineer, you will be responsible for imagining and building the software demonstrations that are the core of what we do. These will explain both prosaic AI capabilities and more advanced ones that are fast approaching.

Key responsibilities:

• Build demos of AI capabilities and risks.
• Come up with new ideas to convey the significance of the AI tidal wave to diverse audiences.
• Work with a small, highly collaborative team where your creativity can have major positive impact.
• Work across the entire stack, from UI/UX to AI models like GPT/Claude. (Ask about our Claude Code setup :)

Projects might include:

• An AI voice-based puzzle game where the user interacts with various characters on the road to AGI. As far as we know, it's the first of its kind!
• A misaligned agent acting in a virtual software environment (e.g. a recreation of an electronic health record system or a military platform).
• Using someone's LinkedIn profile to make instant deepfakes, news articles, and phishing emails targeting them.

Salary and benefits:

• The role is full-time and on-site at our office in Berkeley, California.
• The salary range is $125,000 to $150,000.
• We provide catered lunch and dinner at our office every weekday.
• Candidates with 5 years of experience may apply to our Senior Software Engineer role.
