What are the responsibilities and job description for the ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER position at Clark County?

The Department of Administrative Services Animal Protection Services Division is seeking qualified candidates to apply for the position of Animal Control Officer.  The Animal Protection Services Division provides continuous 24-hour animal protection services and is the rabies control authority for all unincorporated Clark County.  This position provides services for live, sick, injured and dead stray animals, and enforces specified State and County codes to ensure the safety and protection of the community.  

THIS RECRUITMENT IS LIMITED TO THE FIRST 250 APPLICATIONS RECEIVED AND WILL CLOSE WITHOUT NOTICE ONCE THAT NUMBER IS REACHED.

This examination will establish an Open Competitive Eligibility list to fill current and/or future vacancies that may occur within the next six (6) months or may be extended as needed by Human Resources.

Equivalent to two (2) years of full-time college level course work in criminal justice, veterinary technology or a field related to the work, AND two (2) years of full-time experience in animal care and/or control work. 


Qualifying education and experience must be clearly documented in the “Education” and “Work Experience” sections of the application.  Do not substitute a resume for your application or write "see attached resume" on your application. 

Working Conditions: Willingness to handle injured, ill and dead animals in potentially hazardous situations. Wear a uniform as specified. Work extended or off-hours shifts or be called back in emergency situations.

Licensing and Certification: Must possess a valid Nevada Class C driver's license at time of appointment.

Background Investigation: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation. Periodically after employment background investigations may be conducted.

Medical Examination: Employment is contingent upon the results of a physical examination performed by our examining physician.

Pre-Employment Drug Testing: Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment drug examination.Investigates complaints from the public and other agencies regarding nuisance, stray, uncontrolled, dangerous or diseased animals. Drives a County vehicle to reach various work sites, attend meetings and respond to emergencies. Conducts investigations of complaints regarding animal cruelty and neglect; investigates animal bites, arranging for appropriate identification and quarantine. Explains local laws, codes and ordinances relating to the care and control of animals, filing of complaints, and policies of the shelter to the public; sells rabies vaccination, microchip, or sterilization vouchers to animal owners. Issues citations for violations of applicable regulations; patrols assigned areas operating County vehicles. Captures stray and unlicensed animals for impounding; removes dead animals from public and private properties; transports injured animals and provides for their care. Testifies in court regarding citations and disposition of complaints. Maintains records and prepares daily reports related to work performed. Operates humane traps, mobile radios, cellular phones, and related animal control tools and equipment. Identifies basic symptoms of common animal diseases and recommends veterinary medical care of isolation to the animal owner. Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team. Assists other agencies and County departments in animal control and handling. May collect rabies vaccination certificates from various Veterinarians and Animal Hospitals. May perform dispatching duties on a relief basis. May train others in work procedures.Strength and mobility to work in a typical field patrol setting, including driving a motor vehicle; stamina to perform sustained physical labor, including standing, walking, climbing and working in confined or awkward spaces; strength to lift and maneuver animals weighing up to 150 pounds with proper equipment; vision to read printed materials; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over a radio or telephone. Accommodation may be made for some of these physical demands for otherwise qualified individuals who require and request such accommodation.

Salary : $27 - $42
