What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tap Instructor/Choreographer position at Cleveland City Ballet?
Position available for 2025/2026 season.
Responsibilities
- Teach tap dance classes with a focus on flexibility, strength, balance, tumbling, and transitions
- Plan structured and level-appropriate lessons
- Encourage proper form and technique to prevent injury and promote long-term success
- Track student development and adjust curriculum as needed
- Choreograph tap routines for performances and recitals
- Maintain a safe, supportive, and inclusive classroom environment
- Communicate with parents and studio staff as needed
- Attend studio events, rehearsals, and staff meetings when required
Qualifications
- Prior experience teaching tap required
- Strong knowledge of body alignment, spotting techniques, and progression-based teaching
- Ability to engage students of varying ages and skill levels (typically ages 4–18)
- Excellent communication, leadership, and classroom management skills
- Passionate about encouraging confidence and physical development in young dancers

Cleveland City Ballet is seeking dance instructors who want to be part of a studio that teaches character development and leadership throughout their classes. The ideal candidate will have strong skills and significant experience in teaching several dance styles including ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, pointe, and contemporary. Other experience includes choreography and stage performances, creating lesson plans for different skill levels/ages, and facilitating a safe and positive dancing/class environment. Candidates must be comfortable with and enjoy teaching a wide range of ages and skill levels from very young children through adults.
Additional responsibilities include: substitute teacher for other classes, front office, marketing, open house/enrollment, mass intros, staff meetings, and other studio functions.
As part of the interview process, candidates will be asked to provide examples of their past choreography and may be invited to teach as a guest instructor.
