What are the responsibilities and job description for the Phlebotomist position at Clinton Memorial Hospital?
SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Laboratory Services Manager, performs a wide variety of secretarial, clerical and phlebotomy duties utilizing a computer and other office equipment as necessary. Will collect blood with needles, syringes, vacutainers, tubes and micro devices. Maintains outpatient orders in an orderly manner making sure that we have accurate orders and diagnosis; may have to travel to nursing homes and physician offices to obtain specimens; and enters accurate billing and personal information into the computer system. Will be required to perform EKG testing on Outpatients and PAT patients after proper training.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS
High school graduate or equivalent with secretarial, business training, phlebotomy training and Medical Terminology is preferred. Must be able to type a minimum of 40 words per minute accurately. Experience as a phlebotomist is preferred. Experience in a health care setting is helpful. Requires six months of on-the-job training to perform proficiently.

Strong skills in oral and written communication, customer service, organization, decision making, time management, and interpersonal relations. Ability to exercise independent judgment. Basic computer skills.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs phlebotomy procedures to include venipuncture, arterial draws, heel sticks and finger sticks.
- Compiles monthly statistics about orders to make sure we are up to date for our standing orders.
- Performs specimen registration and inputs case histories in the LIS.
- Collates and distributes patient reports to appropriate physician, unit, or agency.
- Attends all mandatory meetings and is familiar with Laboratory Compliance and HIPAA regulations.
- Performs EKG testing as needed on all Outpatients and PAT patients.
- Performs Test Requesting on Outpatients, checks diagnosis and compliance checks as necessary.
- Communicates with Order Entry personnel if there are questionable tests ordered for the reference laboratory as well as consulting with office/physician to clarify test needed.
- Performs job responsibilities in a manner consistent with the customer service goals and objectives of the department and hospital.
- Performs all other related duties as requested or required by the Laboratory Services Manager, Laboratory Operations Supervisor, Senior Techs or Laboratory Medical Director.
