The Assistant Controller will support the Controller in overseeing the company’s accounting operations and financial reporting. This role ensures compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and industry regulations. The Assistant Controller will collaborate closely with company leadership to contribute to strategic financial planning, improve operational efficiency, and optimize overall financial performance.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee the revenue recognition and accounts receivable processes, ensuring accurate invoicing and timely collections.
- Code invoices, set up new accounts, and perform regular account reconciliation.
- Verify and process accounts payable, ensuring timely payments and proper account allocation.
- Process payroll and prepare related reports in compliance with company policies.
- Issue customer invoices and reconcile deposits accurately and promptly.
- Complete monthly Work in Progress (WIP) calculation.
- Record monthly manual journal entries and maintain supporting documentation.
- Assist in the month-end close process and preparation of financial reporting packages.
- Maintain the integrity of financial data and ensure compliance with GAAP and internal controls.
- Monitor and manage cash flow, ensuring alignment with budget forecasts and business needs.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with vendors and project managers.
- Ensure vendor compliance with documentation requirements including W-9s, Certificates of Insurance (COI), and Master Service Agreements (MSA).
- Act as the primary point of contact for external auditors and tax professionals during audits and reviews.
- Evaluate and improve internal accounting procedures and financial workflows for greater efficiency and risk mitigation.
- Assist in implementing and maintaining effective internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure accurate reporting.
- Identify and recommend process improvements to streamline operations and reduce errors.
- Perform additional accounting and finance tasks as required.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 4 years of accounting experience.
- Experience with preparation and/or review of financial statements.
- Strong understanding of GAAP, financial compliance, and internal controls.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to interpret and analyze financial data and legal agreements.
- Experience working with third-party consultants, such as auditors and legal counsel.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) and financial systems.
- Experience with Sage or similar accounting software.
Education and Experience:
- BS in Accounting or similar field from a 4-year college or university.
- CPA license or CPA candidate preferred.
- Experience in public accounting or a similar industry environment is a plus.
- Knowledge of industry-specific accounting standards (e.g., construction, real estate, non-profit) is beneficial.
