School Counselor
Responsible to : Principal
Qualifications :
- Valid Tennessee License with proper endorsements
- Master's Degree in School Counseling preferred
- Strong written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal skills
- Competent technological skills
Essential Responsibilities :
Counsels with individuals or groups for academic, personal, social, emotional and
career development
Counsels with students to develop understanding of and providing opportunity for
personal goals, choices, and values and their relationship in decision-making
Consults with school administration, staff, and other resource agencies in planning
services to meet the needs of all children
- Consults with school personnel in promoting attendance and academic achievement.
- Counsels with referrals from administrators and / or teachers for problems related to
attendance, academics, discipline, retention, or other administrative related issues
and works with teachers to implement intervention strategies
Develops and aligns a social / personal developmental curriculum, based on state and
local standards, appropriate for the grade / age of students served
Works to resolve student problems through consultation with classroom teachers,
parents, and other resources available in the school or community
Schedules regular small group and classroom presentations for the delivery of
personal and social curriculum materials
- Assists with registration and orientation of new students into the school program
- Assists in maintaining and protecting student / records
- Regularly monitors academic progress of all assigned students
- Works to discover and develop special abilities of individual students
- Fosters an awareness of careers, occupations, and job awareness in a manner
appropriate to the age of students served
Participates in school level, system level, and other professional development and in-
service activities
Stays alert to best practices in the counseling area, serve as a resource for teachers in
helping them in understanding students and how to meet students' intellectual and
personal needs
Participates in the development / implementation of an educational plan or other
administrative structures to facilitate meeting the needs of individual students
Assists in basic assessment of students if it will help in resolving learning
problems or provide direction for determination of student services as needed
Consults with parents to aid them in understanding their children's personal, social,
academic and career development
- Implements home visits as needed
- Utilizes the various means of communication available to inform parents / guardian
and students of the services available through the counseling office
Assists students in the development of the attitudes and characteristics and the job-
seeking skills necessary to obtain and maintain employment
Assists in the selection and administration of appropriate assessment instruments for
group behavior, study skills, attitudes, and values
Assists students in developing and monitoring their educational plan (6-year plan,
post-secondary plan)
- Provides necessary financial aid information to students and parents
- Implements a plan of action to assist students with the transition between
academic / grade levels
General Requirements :
- Follows Federal and State Laws and adopted policies and procedures in accordance with School Board priorities
- Conducts oneself in the best interest of students, in accordance with the highest standards of public education and in support of the District's Vision / Mission Statements
- Maintains ethical standards, which include professionalism and the protection of confidential student and staff information
- Other responsibilities and / or duties may be required and assigned
