Position Summary

The Maintenance Mechanic is accountable for maintaining and repairing all types of power plant and steam distribution equipment, buildings, grounds and vehicles at the Bridgeport site. This includes completing all related Preventative Maintenance and repair work orders.

The Maintenance Mechanic is accountable to Maintenance Manager and operates within the context and prescribed limits established by Plant Management.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

Major accountabilities that are specific to this position:


  • Provide input to the Maintenance Manager including plans and directions and ensure on-going appropriate relationships with other positions.
  • Ensure the delivery of optimal results against appropriate performance metrics. Complete Preventative Maintenance and repair work orders as assigned.
  • Maintain all tools used in performance of duties.
  • Maintain inventory of designated materials, tools and equipment.
  • Support all aspects of the lubrication functions.
  • Participate in various training programs to help support maintenance functions and professional development.
  • Report to the Maintenance Manager or other appropriate plant management personnel regarding any unusual conditions.
  • Support the storeroom inventory management process. Research, source and order parts and materials as required. Set up shipping and receiving parts and materials required to maintain the facility.
  • Diagnoses mechanical system and equipment problems.
  • Serves as a technical resource for personnel with regard to mechanical systems and equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Conducts routine mechanical system and equipment inspections and tests as required to ensure the plant is operating within specified parameters.
  • Responds to all mechanical system and equipment alarms and malfunctions as directed. Coordinate with the Lead Operator to identify and initiate appropriate corrective actions
  • Analyzes trends and operating parameters on all mechanical systems and equipment to identify potential or impending failures and to ensure plant is running at optimal efficiency. Coordinates with the Maintenance Manager and/or Lead Operator to identify and initiate appropriate corrective actions.
  • Repairs, maintains and installs mechanical systems and equipment; rearranges and maintains and modifies as directed for optimal equipment performance.
  • Develops and follows predictive, preventative and corrective maintenance procedures and schedules. Performs a variety of maintenance activities including but not limited to, machining, welding and pipefitting functions, equipment and test equipment calibration and alignment, inspection testing, lubrication, and perform any typical related work activities such as pump alignment, motor replacement, valve maintenance, filter replacement, and any specific activity covered during professional development training,
  • Perform adjustments and maintenance corrections on equipment found operating beyond the prescribed setting or an unsafe condition.
  • Operates plant equipment as required (trucks, cranes, forklift, scissor and aerial lifts).
  • Assists the Maintenance Manager during all outage periods where required.
  • Understands and comply with all applicable environmental, health and safety policies while conducting maintenance.
  • Maintains a safe working environment to include good housekeeping practices of work areas and shop areas.
  • Maintains mechanical system and shop areas as assigned.
  • Participates in and contributes to plant safety meetings and programs. Presents various safety training topics as assigned. Brings ideas for safety improvements forward. Documents all safety findings appropriately (near miss reporting, safety work orders, incident investigation participation, and safety improvement plan). Stops work and takes corrective action if an unsafe act is witnessed and escalates to management as appropriate. Enforces site safety rules and practices.
  • Adheres to the requirements of Process Safety Management and the Risk Management Program
  • Adheres to Bridgeport’s Management of Change program.
  • Supervises contractors on-site when designated by the Maintenance Manager.
  • Participates in the upkeep of plant grounds as required (e.g. snow removal, walkway salting, lawn maintenance, etc.).
  • May be required to travel for parts and services in time of need to neighboring facilities or service shops.
  • Must be able to pass a respirator clearance exam and respirator fit test for participation in respiratory protection program.
  • Must be willing to travel for required company business.
  • Work in confined spaces utilizing appropriate safety equipment
  • Work above grade utilizing appropriate fall protection equipment
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience Required

Skilled Knowledge:

  • High school graduate two years of trade or technical school with training in fundamentals of The Power Plant Cycle
  • At least 6 years' experience in general power plant maintenance work
  • Good working knowledge of power plant equipment
  • Maintain First Aid & CPR Certification

Technical Skills:

  • Research, read, and interpret complicated drawings, manuals, P&ID’s, and blueprints
  • Highly skilled in repair, maintenance and installation of power plant equipment
  • Certified Forklift Operator
  • Proficient and capable of using tools of the trade
  • Must be proficient in Computerized Maintenance Management System, Maximo.
  • Proficient in other computer technology and use of various computer-based tools
  • (Word, Excel, PI, RedTag Pro, etc.), time keeping, computer-based training and others as needs and technology changes over time.

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This position requires extended working hours and varied shifts including weekend and holiday work. The ability to be “on call” will be required.

  • Working in varied outdoor environments such as all-weather conditions, all noise levels, hazardous conditions, and on the full range of outdoor work surfaces.
