Coherent Laser Systems and Measurement (LSM) designs and manufactures precision solid state lasers for scientific, medical, instrumentation and vision markets, as well as calibrated laser measurement systems for a wide variety of laser type and power applications. The business provides critical technology to thousands of global customers with a wide range of products specifically tailored to satisfy demanding customer requirements. LSM is located just minutes South of Portland, Oregon and enjoys spectacular North-West weather and activity opportunities.

Position Description

This position is part of the Manufacturing Engineering Department and is responsible for coating process development and improvement. The Coating Process Lab supports creation of optical sensor structures utilizing a variety of powder, liquid, and vapor coating technologies. Sustaining in this context consists of design, specification, and repair of tooling, mechanical fixtures/packaging, electrical equipment, process controls, chemical processes, and measurement methods. The Department goals for this Lab are to support a continuous flow of new laser sensor product introductions, reduce the cost of existing legacy products, and continually evaluate all processes to improve efficiency and quality. Multi-disciplinary problem solving as well as data analysis are primary aspects of this position.

Key Skills:

Technical skill sets and experience considered essential for the role:

  • Understanding of industrial coating technologies, e.g., evaporative coatings, spin coating, paint spraying, mixing, etc.
  • Working knowledge of equipment facilities, including installation and repair for cooling water, electrical supply, and pneumatic equipment
  • Knowledge of control systems, electronics, and PLCs
  • Experience with high vacuum equipment and/or processing.
  • Background in a variety of critical measurement and analysis techniques
  • Understanding of heat transfer, surface forces, particle/powder technology
  • Ability to collect, review and interpret statistical data and information to evaluate process changes and implement manufacturing solutions.
  • Strong commitment to safety. Working knowledge of safety concerns for these processes and appropriate mitigation. At all times working safely according to local site and applicable regulatory guidelines

Key Tasks:

Typical types of routine tasks expected while performing the role include:

  • Provide hands-on sustaining engineering support and manage change for existing products and processes.
  • Carry out and/or implement process improvements and preventative maintenance, scheduled in conjunction with Manufacturing, to minimize disruptions and improve product quality, yield and throughput.
  • Create and maintain detailed work instructions to support equipment operation and processes.
  • Work with internal Supply Chain and vendors to identify cost reductions, eliminate quality issues, and reduce lead-times.
  • Qualification of new products and alternate BoM items
  • Work on customer RMA events, providing robust containment and resolution and providing reports in 8D format.
  • Determine root cause and corrective actions to resolve manufacturing issues involving noncompliant product or material. 
  • All actions to comply with site, company and regulatory environmental, health and safety rules.

Additional applicable skill sets:

Proficiency in these any of areas will be an advantage:

  • Photonics, optics, laser technologies
  • Lean manufacturing
  • Ability to design, draft, and tolerance mechanical parts.
  • Design of Experiments (DOE) 
  • Statistical Process Control (SPC)
  • Industrial cleaning methods.
  • Materials testing techniques, such as FTIR, SEM, X-Ray etc.
  • Use of structured problem-solving tools for root cause analysis of complex problems.
  • Product and BoM item qualification procedures, such as FAI.
  • Ability to learn new technologies and adapt to a fast-moving manufacturing environment with changing priorities.

Education and Work Experience:

  • B.S. in engineering or science degree, such as Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, or Optics/Photonics
  • 5 years’ experience in high-tech Process Engineering, and/or Manufacturing Engineering environment related to deposition onto substrates.
  • Experience with hi-tech manufacturing methodologies and procedures.
