Columbus House opened its doors in 1982 to provide services for men and women at least 18 years of age. Our goals quickly broadened from the mere provision of food and shelter and simple survival, to understanding and working toward overcoming the problems which cause people to become homeless.

Columbus House, along with its core of loyal supporters, friends, and volunteers, has remained committed to fulfilling its mission: "To serve people experiencing homelessness or at imminent risk by providing life-saving outreach, shelter and housing and by fostering their personal growth and independence. We advocate for and create affordable housing to end homelessness in our communities."

Purpose
Under the direction of the Employment and Benefits Manager, the Financial Coach will develop and empower clients on how to manage their finances. The Financial Coach will also run the EEC (Employment and Enrichment Center) located in New Haven. The EEC is a program/class for people who wish to better themselves through Education and Enrichment. Classes include introduction to Computers, Math, Reading and Comprehension, Resume and Cover Letter Writing, Employment Search Tools, Interviewing Skills, Creative Writing, Financial Literacy, etc. The Financial Coach works directly with the client, his or her support team in the greater New Haven, New London, Hartford, and Middlesex areas.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5 years’ experience in personal finance, or 10 years of comparable experience in other related fields.
  • Self-motivated person able to develop and implementing financial programs.
  • Research best practices on how to teach clients to increase their wealth.
  • Knowledge of basic tax preparation and budgeting.
  • Knowledge of government assistance programs, and basic child credits.
  • Responsible, reliable, able to conduct oneself professionally while maintaining client confidentiality, and respecting proper relationship boundaries.
  • Demonstrated history of cultural sensitivity and knowledge of and respect for persons suffering from mental health and substance use disorders.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with a deadline-oriented mindset.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills employing the English language.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and other common desk top applications.
  • Able to work with diverse populations.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making ability.
  • Crisis intervention skills, boundaries, confidentiality, universal precautions, harm reduction, strong empathetic skills.
  • Possessed of a strong desire to promote equal access and opportunity for homeless persons and those with disabilities.
  • Familiar with mental health, substance abuse and dual diagnosis issues and dynamics. Ability to collaborate successfully with others.
  • Able to meet all documentation requirements.
  • Must be able to multitask.
  • Ability to facilitate a class to empower, motivate, and educate.
  • Valid drivers’ license with a good driving history.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop the program from the start. Interview clients to determine current income, expenses, financial objectives, and other information.
  • Work directly with clients to assist in credit building, banking, and other financial resources as it relates to their successful development.
  • Assist clients on how to best manage their finances, and budgeting improvements and credit score increases for clients in the program, to live independently.
  • Provide outreach, assessments, intakes and follow up services, to continue financial supports as needed.
  • Attend regular scheduled supervision, team or staff meetings as requested.
  • Work closely with team members to deliver program requirements, develop solutions, and meet deadlines.
  • Monitor all cases assigned and complete all documentation/charting as required.
  • Assist with the delivery of the Employment Enrichment Center Groups as assigned.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality concerning both program applicants and accepted clients while carrying out all duties.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Supervised by: Employment and Benefits Manager

Salary Range: $ 25.50 – 27.50 per hour plus excellent benefits

Schedule: Tuesday thru Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
