What are the responsibilities and job description for the WildeCamp Lead at The Wilds position at Columbus Zoo Family of Parks?
Overview
This position will be from 5/02/2025 to 6/3/2025.
WildeCamp Leads reports to the On-site Programs Coordinator and oversee daily operations of WildeCamp at The Wilds. WildeCamp is a residential camp experience for children ages 8-18. During these camp sessions, WildeCamp Leads assist with coordination of daily activities and experiences for campers as well as manage a team of WildeCamp counselors to ensure a high-quality program and camper safety. WildeCamp Leads also will assist in the training and development of WildeCamp Counselors including going over procedures, vehicle operation, and youth development. WildeCamp Leads will be on a rotating schedule (Sunday-Friday from 7:30AM-3:30PM or 2PM-10PM). On-site housing is available (for nominal fee).
Responsibilities
Support The Wilds by leading an unforgettable residential camp experience for youth ages 8–18. Join our mission to inspire and educate while ensuring camper safety and creating meaningful outdoor adventures.
Leadership & Supervision
- Assist with managing a team of 12 Counselors to ensure staff communication, camper safety, and staff and youth development.
- Attend virtual trainings during the Spring (dates will be sent out upon selection of applicants).
- Attend in-person onboarding and summer planning (5/2/2026-5/3/2026 Leads only and 5/28/2026-6/3/2026 All Summer Staff).
- Other duties as assigned.
Program Delivery & Camper Experience
- Lead education programs to people of all ages – especially focused on ages 8-18 years old for WildeCamp’s mission.
- Create fun and memorable opportunities for all program participants.
- Supervise outdoor activities such as fishing, hiking, archery, and swimming.
Safety & Compliance
- Make safety a priority including reviewing health, behavior, and accident reports daily.
- Communicate health and behavior concerns to parents if Coordinator and Camp Nurse are not present.
- Administer nighttime medications as needed.
- Ensure food safe environment, storage, and transportation.
Facilities & Transportation
- Monitor cleanliness of Education Camp including shower house/restrooms, yurts, and kitchen/dining area.
- Drive school bus on Wilds’ property (will train as needed).
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Preferred minimum of two years of college-level coursework completed in related field (education, science, etc.) or equivalent experience.
- Experience with school-age children.
- Experience in a previous leadership role.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
- Comfortable in and on the water, able to hike long distances, and willing to supervise and participate in outdoor recreational activities.
- All staff must be prepared to spend weeklong periods living at The Wilds.
Professional Skills
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays.
- Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures including but not limited to safety protocols.
- Ability to work together with a team and contribute to the positive and inclusive culture of camp.

- Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to provide excellent guest service by positively interacting with guests.
Certifications & Requirements
- Possession of a state issued motor vehicles operator’s license and a good driving record.
- Must be willing to be trained to drive school bus while on Wilds’ property.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification required (training will be offered).
- Lifeguard Certification required (training will be offered).
- Ability to successfully complete a criminal history background check annually.
