What are the responsibilities and job description for the Behavioral Health Intervention Specialist position at Community Centered Counseling Services?

Toward efforts to maintain state requirements and high ethical standards of practice, the following list of requirements and advantages have been defined for BHIS Specialists:
BHIS Specialist requirements:
1) Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Education (or related fields).
2) Attending bi-weekly supervision, typically lasting for 30 minutes up to an hour depending on tenure, experience and caseload. This time will be spent connecting with the BHIS supervisor, updating client situations and progress, and brainstorming new ideas and approaches to meet client needs.
3) Attend staff meetings once a month (in place of individual supervision) for a BHIS-centric meeting with the therapist team for case reviews and peer supervision.
4) Each BHIS Specialist is expected to update their active client list prior to their scheduled individual supervision and monthly staff meeting.
5) All BHIS Specialists are expected to stay up to date on their paperwork for each two-week billing period. Sessions will be reimbursed on a two week pay schedule, after case notes are completed, locked and signed by the specialist, and approved by management for billing.
6) The BHIS Specialist will adhere to training guidelines to meet state and professional standards, as established by the agency, and designed to enhance their work with clients.
7) The BHIS Specialist (as all agency employees) will adhere to the NASW Code of Ethics.

Behavioral Health Intervention Services (BHIS) is a Title-19 funded service for children (4-18) and their families. BHIS is typically an additional service in conjunction with therapy to address client needs; it is also frequently a stand-alone service. BHIS is typically administered in the client’s home (or in office if preferred) through two one-hour long sessions per week; an individual session using activities to teach and develop healthy skills, and a family session focused on caregiver/family interactions to promote the use of new skills. BHIS goals focus on improving client functioning by targeting behavioral symptoms of mental/behavioral health diagnoses. BHIS goals are derived collaboratively between the BHIS Specialist and the family to address identified issues in the client’s intake and assessment done by a Master’s level clinician.
BHIS skill development addresses a broad range of issues, including: mindfulness and patience, conflict resolution, problem solving, coping skills, impulse control, social interaction skills, relationship skills, communication skills, emotional regulation skills, and more generally develops cognitive and emotional flexibility to assist clients in coping with symptoms of mental/behavioral health diagnoses, difficult family dynamics, problematic social interactions, and other life stressors.
Teaching BHIS skills is as unique from you as it should to the individual you are working with – this requires some creativity and flexibility. BHIS Specialists utilize evidence-based approaches as well as their own creativity in addressing client needs.
