Position Title: Residential Instructor
Reports To:      Program Manager
Department: Residential Services
            
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
1.    Must be able to perform all job functions and duties that are required of the Residential Instructors. Must be able to lift and transfer 70-75 pounds.
2.    Create a learning environment, develop strategies to help residents cope effectively with social, emotional, and physical situations in daily living, and facilitate independent performance in these areas.
3.     When qualified as Medication Certified, administer medications to residents at prescribed times, according to Medication Administration policy. Document administration of medication according to policy. Report all errors of medication dispensation or documentation according to policy.
4.     Follow written dietary plans for each resident; assist with the preparation of meals, and purchasing of supplies.
5.    Maintain the cleanliness of the home, inside and outside. Assist with all laundry care. 6.    Use own personal vehicle to transport residents to and from a variety of community based outings as requested. Personal vehicle must be properly maintained and adequately equipped with gasoline.
7.    Attend and participate in required staff meetings.
8.    Successfully complete all in-service training required for the position within timelines and participate in all other trainings, as assigned.
9.    Maintain a current CPR, First Aid, PMT and DDS Med Administration Certification during employment.
10.    Follow agency policies including but not limited to: confidentiality, dress code, and hygiene.
11.    To be knowledgeable of resident’s preferences and life plan.
12.    Respect the rights of the resident.
13.    Seek out and use resident’s preferences and choices in planning, developing, and implementing activities.
14.    To provide supervision, support and/or training to residents in each skill area as indicated within Individual Plans and in general activities.
15.    Access medical support as needed—including scheduling; and/or transporting residents if necessary; attending the appointment; accurately sharing information with appropriate personnel; and obtaining medication.
16.    Maintain a safe environment by practicing safe work habits and adhering to agency safety policies.
17.    Document and maintain information, including, but not limited to: IP , Progress notes, Incident reports, Health/medical issues, and Money/financial records and reports. 18.    Respect the resident’s right to confidentiality by sharing information only with written consent of the consumer or guardian.
19.    Respect resident’s rights and provide on-going communication with families, guardians and interdisciplinary team members.
20.    Advocate for residents in the community and workplace by maintaining both oral and written communication.
21.    Notify day support staff, physician/nurse and parent/guardians regarding a resident’s illness or accident. Assure the provision of medical care or other treatment. 22.    To work as a team member, providing support and assistance to other staff members within the program.
23.    To provide exemplary services by actively supporting quality improvement initiatives.
24.    Perform other work related duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor and/or other management as required.
Physical Demands
The work requires physical exertion and moving about including bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, kneeling, and reaching or similar activities. Lifting objects required, typically weight does not 50lbs. Occasional 75 Snow shoveling required. Occasional lifting or transferring an individual required. Physically restraining residents, using appropriate PMT techniques, required occasionally.
Mental/Visual Demands
Frequent mental and visual attention is required in working with residents. Work is occasionally repetitive and requires alertness an concentration. Listening and communication may require more more intense concentration.  Mental demands most significant in dealing with small groups of residents in living arrangements and negotiation skills among residents.
Unavoidable Hazards/Risk
The work involves moderate risk requiring special safety precautions, exposure to blood or bodily fluids, aggressive behaviors, etc.  Employees may be required to use PPE personal protective equipment or gear such as gloves, masks, etc.  The magnitude of bodily injury resulting from work hazards is moderate.  
JOB REQUIREMENTS
 
1.    Must possess a valid CT Driver’s License and a good driving record.  Must have your own vehicle and carry a current registration and insurance on the vehicle.  
2.
  Must be able to obtain, and maintain, CPR, First Aid, PMT, Medication Certification within the regulations and time frames set. 
 
3. Successful pass backgrounds checks to include:  Criminal, motor vehicle, Sex Offender, DDS abuse and Neglect, PPD screening, and Drug Testing.
