ABOUT US:
Community Supported Shelters is a (501)(c)(3) charitable organization based in Eugene, Oregon. CSS is nationally recognized for confronting the issue of homelessness and is known for its unique Conestoga hut micro-shelters. The huts are built in intentionally designed communities - often off-grid - that provide safe, supported shelter for unhoused people in our community.
ROLE:
The Maintenance Coordinator will coordinate maintenance, repairs, and procurement of materials and supplies for Safe Spot Communities and CSS facilities. The coordinator will lead the Maintenance Team, volunteers, and Workforce Development participants in the day-to-day projects and perform hands-on work on the properties and individual shelter units as needed under the direction of the Facilities Manager.
SCHEDULE:
- 32-40 hours per week.
- Typically, Monday – Friday hours as arranged; some nights, weekends, and on-call.
REPORTS TO: Facilities Manager
SUPERVISES: Maintenance Team, Volunteers, and Workforce Development participants.
KEY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Team Coordination:
- Coordinate daily scheduling, coverage, and training for all Maintenance Team members, volunteers, and Workforce Development participants.
- Partner with the Volunteer Coordinator to support the Hut Crew and other Facilities volunteers in planned one-time and ongoing projects.
- Collaborate with the Facilities and Service Teams to engage clients in appropriately caring for their huts and Safe Spot Communities.
- Develop and supervise opportunities for client engagement with the Maintenance Team via our Workforce Development Program.
- Maintain cooperation and positive relations with staff, clients, partner agencies, volunteers and donors, contractors, public officials, and the general public.
Property Maintenance, Repairs, and Site Development:
- Assume the role of point person when there are maintenance repair needs at any CSS-managed facility, including offices, shop space, CSS vehicles, and Safe Spots.
- Responsible for coordinating all day-to-day facility-related operations, including scheduled maintenance, repairs, upgrades, work requests, and emergencies at all Community Supported Shelters facilities. This includes but is not limited to . . .
- Repair and maintenance of Safe Spot infrastructure, key/lock repair and replacement, pathways and access points, fences, and gates.
- Repair and maintain Conestoga huts; store, assemble, and dismantle huts and hut pieces safely.
- Deliver potable water, greywater removal, and filtration systems, as well as repair and maintenance of water systems and tools, including bi-annual sanitation of handwashing and water tank systems.
- Ensure all properties' parking lots and grounds are well-maintained, with snow removal, yard maintenance, and mowing, and are free of debris, hazards, etc.
- Maintain the proper functioning of solar systems and greywater filtration systems. Troubleshoot for solutions and repairs when necessary.
- Lead Maintenance Team responsibility for coordinating weekly client Work Parties at our various locations, working alongside clients and staff to maintain and improve Safe Spot Communities.
- Provide ongoing maintenance and repair of CSS properties, including minor electrical, carpentry, dry plumbing, painting, and flooring.
- Be the point person for on-site utility vendors and hazardous material disposal.
- Maintain the shop's and other workspaces' health, safety, and cleanliness.
- Respond to priority or emergency infrastructure needs at CSS-managed facilities and respond to emergency calls for facilities requests after regular work hours as needed.
Project Management & Administration:
- Maintain records and use CSS project management software or forms to coordinate and log maintenance at CSS-managed facilities.
- Monitor fire/safety/security equipment and work with program staff to ensure a safe and supportive environment for clients, staff, and volunteers. Organize and record all fire, safety, and security inspections for compliance.
- Follow up on incidents with appropriate documentation and communication.
- Coordinate and collaborate with the Facilities and Service Teams to regularly inspect shelter facilities to assess damage, safety needs, and rodent/pest control. Notate needed repairs and keep staff informed of progress.
- Maintain an inventory of all equipment, materials, and supplies, ensuring they are safely cleaned, stored, and in good repair.
- Coordinate maintenance of the organization’s fleet of vehicles, ensuring vehicle information is up to date, and routine maintenance is performed.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- At least 2 years of maintenance, property management, construction, or landscaping experience with progressive responsibility (5 years preferred).
- Must have a valid driver's license, be careful, be comfortable towing various trailers and equipment, and be insurable (CDL / forklift a plus).
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs safely and controlled throughout a workday.
- Mechanically inclined and experienced working with power tools and machinery.
- Possess basic computer skills and the ability to navigate a digital environment. Experience with database management, the Google Suite, and Cognito is a plus.
- Professional and compassionate written and verbal communication skills: listening, reflecting on what you heard, and double-checking for accuracy.
- Solid organizational and problem-solving skills, strong attention to detail, the ability to think outside the box, and resourcefulness and flexibility.
- Ability to manage and prioritize projects, timelines, and competing demands with grace.
- Enthusiasm to work independently and with a small to large team of diverse individuals, and being comfortable with regularly leading a small team.
- Ability to operate on a schedule, stay focused, and gracefully remove yourself from a situation going nowhere; ability to accurately track the time worked in a day.
- Experience in setting firm boundaries and communicating clearly to a diverse group of people with different states of mental capacity while demonstrating a professional demeanor at all times.
- Commitment to establish trust and respect with clients, staff, and community partners and deliver services with dignity and respect for all individuals; Trauma-Informed Care a plus.

- Experience working with vendors, contractors, and property managers a plus
- Background knowledge of safe handling and disposal of chemicals and hazardous waste; emergency preparedness plans and their implementation.
Flex Support Addendum:
- Availability and willingness to provide flexible support for various aspects of CSS operations including but not exclusive to Access Center duties, Shuttle Services, logistics and supplies, Support Worker duties, events, Food Services, or other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Often outdoors and in occasional extreme conditions in the field and at the CSS shop (semi-outdoors) and offices.
- Will spend the most time outdoors at CSS-managed Safe Spot Communities.
- Driving CSS trucks, hauling trailers, and using power tools will be an everyday occurrence.
- Will work from a computer in a shared office or a designated laptop.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $18.00 - $22.00 per hour
