Accounting Technician I

Temporary position - 3 or more months; Hours - up to 5 hrs/day; 25 hrs/weekIndependently maintains a complete set of financial records, including general and subsidiary records;

Receives financial documents, screens for accuracy and adherence to legal and procedural requirements, carries out procedural steps to insure or authorize payments, posts data to records, and checks and balances totals;

Prepares warrant reports;

Codes documents according to classification and accounts for input into County data processing;

Checks expenditure requests against authorized budgetary levels and approves or returns to originator;

Corrects data processing print-outs;

Makes journal entries; maintains records of District and/or school related activities income;

Checks invoices for proper extensions, tax discounts, and funds;

Prepares control forms for data processing to run warrants and journal sheets;

Distributes invoice charges to proper school and/or accounts;

Checks journal sheets for accuracy and prepares expenditure reports;

Researches vendors' complaints on delaying payment of invoices;

Assembles invoices for payment;

Maintains records of expenditures, and other items;

Makes computations and changes to financial data, applying standard formulas and using predetermined guides;

Prepares financial reports and summarizes independently;

Makes up balances and recapitulations from records maintained;

May contact other agencies, Districts, schools and District employees to discuss financial records and transactions;

Gives authoritative information on records maintained;

May compose routine correspondence independently;

Operates computers, calculators and other office machines.Experience:
Increasingly responsible experience in the maintenance of financial or statistical records (course work directly applicable to duties of the class may be substituted for the required experience.

Persons with the knowledge, abilities and experience as stated above are considered to have the necessary education.
*Alternate variations of education/experience may be considered by Personnel Commission staff as acceptable to qualify for participation in the examination process resulting in an eligibility list.Knowledge of:
Methods and practices of financial recordkeeping;
Bookkeeping methods and terminology;
Modern office methods and procedures.

Ability to:
Perform responsible accounting clerical work without immediate supervision;
Make arithmetical calculations with speed and accuracy;
Prepare accurate financial summaries and reports;
Follow through on financial recordkeeping problems to identify source of problem and make proper adjustments to correct data;
Operate office machines such as computers, typewriters, and calculators;
Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
Work cooperatively with those contacted in the course of work.
