Conemaugh Generating Station is a 2-Unit, 1700-MW rated coal-fired power plant. The Apprentice I Operator is the first of four progressions to the Power Plant Operator position. A fully qualified Apprentice 1 is responsible for in depth knowledge of the following equipment: the Bottom Ash and Pyrite Removal System, the Pulverizers, the Generator Auxiliary Systems in the basement and the Auxiliary Boilers. The Apprentice 1 must also have a basic knowledge of all other equipment including equipment layout; nomenclature and purpose; and inspection guidelines for equipment located in the basement area of the plant. Understanding of Unit start-up, shut-down, normal operation as well as alarm response to all equipment in this area is required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Operation, lubrication and inspection of boilers and turbine auxiliary equipment
- Daily inspections and rounds of equipment including boiler, turbine, cooling towers, and ash removal systems using handheld data collectors
- Equipment isolation and tagging
- Ensuring the safe operation of the generation units
- Understanding of safety procedures, including tagging and confined space.
- Ability to remain alert and observant while on shift.
- Assist in troubleshooting operational problems
- Perform preventative maintenance, incidental or minor equipment repairs
- Must be willing to work weekends, holidays, off shifts, and outages
- Carryout duties as needed from the Operations Shift Supervisors

A high school diploma of GED equivalent is required..
A two year technical degree or military experience related to power plant disciplines is preferred.
Successful completion the entry level classification exam for power plant operators is required.
The incumbent must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills in addition to excellent organizational skills.
A four year commitment in the Operations Department is required upon achieving the fully qualified Power Plant Operator classification.
