Are you passionate about animal welfare? Do you want to make a direct impact in the lives of animals while working with a compassionate, dedicated team? Conway Area Humane Society is looking for a dependable and motivated Animal Caregiver to join our shelter team!

About the Role

The Animal Caregiver plays a vital role in ensuring the health, safety, and comfort of the animals in our care. From feeding and cleaning to enriching and interacting with our shelter pets, you’ll be on the front lines of animal care. You’ll also support adoptions, engage with the public, and maintain a clean and welcoming shelter environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide daily food and water, as instructed.
  • Maintain clean, sanitary living spaces for animals including routine daily kennel & cage cleaning, litter boxes, and food bowls.
  • Clean and organize common areas such as kitchens, meet & greet rooms, laundry, storage rooms, and windows.
  • Participate in canine playgroups, walking dogs along property/trails, feline enrichment, and one-on-one animal time to assess behavior and improve well-being.
  • Engage with potential adopters and assist the adoption staff by sharing personality insights and care information.
  • Represent CAHS professionally while interacting with clients.
  • Mentor volunteers working with animals and assist in training.
  • Monitor animal health daily, promptly reporting any medical or behavioral concerns.
  • Capture photos and information to share with adoption staff to be utilized in promoting animal adoption.
  • Attend or support offsite events, including mobile adoptions and community outreach.
  • Perform additional tasks as directed by the Shelter Manager & Director of Animal Care.

Requirments

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Prior experience working or volunteering with animals is highly preferred. This includes animal shelters, doggie daycare, training facilities, groomers, and veterinary hospitals.
  • A background in customer service is preferred.

What We’re Looking For

  • Compassionate, team-oriented individuals with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Confidence in handling animals of all sizes, backgrounds, and temperaments.
  • Ability to stay calm under pressure and demonstrate good judgment in emotionally demanding situations.
  • Willingness to perform physical labor, including lifting up to 50 lbs and working with cleaning agents.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing needs and tasks throughout the day.

Working Environment

This is a hands-on role in an animal-dense setting. You’ll encounter cleaning chemicals, loud environments, and sometimes emotionally difficult circumstances, such as managing aggressive or terminally ill animals. Most of the day will be on your feet, cleaning, moving donations, walking dogs, and interacting with animals. You’ll also experience the joy of second chances, wagging tails, purring cats, and grateful adopters. The shelter environment is a great way to gain a foothold within the animal welfare career. Shelters are a unique environment that works with the medical, husbandry, and behavioral aspects of animals, all under one roof.

Why Join Us?

At CAHS, you’ll be part of a mission-driven organization that values compassion, teamwork, and integrity. You’ll work alongside a supportive team that shares your love for animals—and you'll help them find the homes they deserve.
