This job is primarily responsible for operating an overhead, barge mounted crane to lift, move, position and reposition loads. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, ensuring load is safely attached to crane before making lifts, performing crane maintenance and inspection of crane. Additionally, this role will perform other duties when not operating the crane (e.g. maintenance and inspection of cables and brakes and other maintenance duties as requested that may not be directly related to crane operation and maintenance). In this job, you will: Actual responsibilities will vary depending on daily needs and type and location of facility. Fully participate in the company Safety Program and attends daily pre-shift meetings. Perform all duties within compliance of OSHA, company safety, and environmental regulations; including wearing appropriate PPE for task being performed. Operate overhead, barge mounted crane (controlled from a cab) to lift, more, and position loads (e.g. pig iron, coal, grain, machinery and equipment using hoisting attachments such as hooks, slings and buckets). Manipulate or depress cane controls (e.g. pedals, levers and buttons) to regulate speed and direction of crane and hoist movement according to written, verbal, or signal instructions. Perform daily inspection of crane for safety issues and determine if any parts/equipment are malfunctioning or broken including cables and brakes. Repair crane as needed and or notify supervisor of defects/malfunctions. Clean, maintain, and lubricate equipment. Complete all necessary documentation whether it be written or on a record keeping device. Work within precise limits and standards of accuracy. Take actions to avoid potential hazards and obstructions such as utility lines, other equipment, other workers, and falling objects. Dependent on facility and location, may be responsible for any variety of the following; leveling buildings, stocking, cutting grass, cutting chocks and general clean-up including sweeping, shoveling, washing, painting, and other general housekeeping responsibilities. Other duties as assigned. Here’s what you’ll need to be considered: Education Required - High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience Required – None. Preferred - 1 years’ experience working in an industrial environment with a dependable work record. Certification Required – None. Preferred – NCCCO Certification. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Working knowledge of computers and applicable software. Intermediate mathematical skills. Effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with the ability to interact with all levels of people within and outside the organization. Ability to analyze problems and offer solutions. Ability to follow directions and use logical through process to interpret oral and written instructions, and troubleshoot problems. Ability to work well both independently and within a team environment. Ability to use tools appropriate for assigned task. Ability to remain focused on exceptional customer service, both internally and externally. Ability to understand the financial implications of task(s) at hand. Ability to handle a high level of responsibility. Strong ability to multi-task with exceptional attention to detail. Here’s additional information you need to know: Physical Demands & Requirements Ability to lift/push/pull 25 lbs. – 50lbs frequently. Ability to sit continuously on an air-cushioned seat. Ability to stand and walk constantly/continuously on various surfaces. Ability to lift from ground level to overhead or at waist level, depending on activity. Push and pull foot controls and hand levers continuously. Reaches forward constantly/continuously and handle levers, hand tools and other equipment as necessary. Ability to climb stairs, climb ladders, balance, stoop and kneel, occasionally. Ability to perform work in confined spaces and significant heights safely. Ability to understand and communicate verbally and/or by signaling, in person and over two-way radio. Ability to work outside in extreme weather conditions. Ability to meet requirements of PFT and fit testing, when applicable. Ability to meet requirement of and utilize all applicable PPE (e.g. hard hat, steel-toed boots, life vest), when applicable. Ability to work extended hours, weekend, holidays and/or alternate shifts as needed. Uses near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, accommodation (adjusting focus between varied distances quickly), color discrimination and field of vision for task(s) being performed. Environmental Conditions The work environments described here are meant to be representative of those an employee would normally encounter while performing the essential functions of this job. The physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Frequently required to use personal protective equipment. Travel, 5%-20% travel may be required at some facilities. This may include off-site training and/or work at alternate locations.
