What are the responsibilities and job description for the LABORATORY TECHNICIAN/PHLEBOTOMIST position at Cornerstone Clinic?
Responsibilities:
-Organizes work by matching computer orders with specimen labeling; sorting specimens; checking labeling; logging specimens; drawing blood and/or collecting and processing specimens; reviewing results and delivering results; keeping work surfaces clean and orderly.
Maintains quality results by running standards and controls, verifying equipment function through routine equipment maintenance and advanced trouble shooting; calibrating equipment utilizing approved testing procedures; monitoring quality control measures and protocols.
Identifies and communicates abnormal patient conditions by alerting supervisory personnel, the patient physician, or nurse; reporting mandated information to the public health department or other designated officials.
(chemistry) Provides test results for patient diagnosis and treatment by operating chemistry equipment; performing hand chemistries through point of care instruments.
(hematology) Provides test results for patient diagnosis and treatment by operating hematology urinalysis and coagulation equipment.
(microbiology) Provides physician with information for treatment of patient infection by performing technical procedures for the identification of bacteria, parasites, and fungi.
Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or test result reporting and correcting the problem or notifying the appropriate supervisor.
Contributes to a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, physicians and co-workers by following established standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
Maintains patient confidence by keeping laboratory information confidential.
Serves and protects the medical community by adhering to professional standards, office policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements.
Participates in continuing education programs, conferences and workshops to comply with mandatory enhancement of professional growth and development.
Maintains confidentiality of patients’ information.
Interacts with co-workers in a way that promotes a harmonious and cooperative working environment.

Qualifications:
Laboratory technicians/phlebotomist must be dependable, organized, and ethical, have good decision-making skills and time management skills, be detail orientated, have good communication skills, and work well with all staff, physicians, and the public. Laboratory technicians are responsible for decisions concerning sample collection and handling, daily instrument maintenance and quality control, sample testing, collection and interpretation of data, maintenance of accurate records and reporting of data, and knowledge of critical values. They must have computer and keyboarding skills, including familiarity with Windows and Electronic Medical Record (EMR). All employees must have the ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. They must have the ability to identify problems, evaluate, correct and/or solve errors or recommend solutions. Laboratory technicians establish priorities and coordinate multiple work activities while communicating honestly, clearly and compassionately with staff and patients.
