What are the responsibilities and job description for the Library Page position at County of Chester?
The Library Page is a part-time position that takes direction from Librarians. The Library Page will locate library materials, such as books, periodicals, and pictures for loan, and replace material in shelving area (stacks) or files, according to identification number and title. This position is an indirect service provider helping to maintain the availability of library materials by shelving books and other materials, reading the shelves, and organizing materials into their proper sequence. This work requires a general understanding of how a library is organized.
This position is responsible for reshelving materials returned to and used in the library, putting materials in alphabetical and numerical order using decimal numbers, keeping shelves and public tables neat, emptying the outside book-drops on schedule throughout the day, and interacting with library patrons in a courteous, professional manner.
Our pages have to process all of these items; completing the following tasks:
• Items to be delivered to a member library must be moved to a designated location to be added to the next day’s van route.
• Items returned via the van delivery service must be removed from boxes and placed on book trucks before they can be processed further.
• After being checked-in, returned items that will remain at our Library have to be sorted, put in order, and returned to the shelves.
All library positions require the following criminal background and child abuse clearances: Report of criminal history from the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP); Child Abuse History Clearance from the Department of Human Services (Child Abuse); and Fingerprint based federal criminal history submitted through the Pennsylvania State Police or its authorized agent (FBI).
Criminal background check is required.
State Child Abuse Clearance is required.
All employees of the Chester County Library are considered a mandated reporter of suspected child abuse under the Child Protective Services Law (Title 23 Pa. C.S.A. Chapter 63).

- Perform shelf reading to ensure materials are in proper order.
- Shelf check overdue items.
- Truck or carry material between shelving area and issue desk.
- Clip pre-marked articles from periodicals.
- Perform general clerical duties such as taking messages, filing, and typing.
- Answer in-person inquiries, help customers locate needed materials, and refer customers to other appropriate assistance.
- Answer directional questions.
- Lift and arrange library furniture, equipment and facilities for use by various library programs and restore the rooms or locations to an orderly condition following their use.
- Assist in other room activities as needed.
- Maintain shelves (dust or clean).
- Search library for misplaced books, materials, and equipment and return materials and equipment to proper location.
- Perform other duties, tasks and special projects, as required.
- High School education (often in progress).
- Minimum High School Junior, 15 years old.
- Must be able to courteously refer clients to the appropriate service desk.
- Must be able to file materials within the appropriate classification scheme.
- Ability to learn Dewey Decimal system and other library filing systems.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to compare numerical material for accuracy.
- Ability to operate microfilm equipment and audiovisual instruments.
- Ability to keep records.

Preferred Skills, Knowledge & Experience:
- Ability to develop a working knowledge about the organization, and care of library materials, services and programs.
- Ability to communicate effectively (verbally, in writing or by listening).
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English in order to perform the duties of the position.

- Knowledge of general vocabulary, spelling and standard English grammar.
- Knowledge of filing procedures, including cross-file indexing.
