WHO WE ARE: The Marathon County Public Library consists of nine locations throughout Marathon County, Wisconsin, including our Wausau Headquarters, plus branches in Athens, Edgar, Hatley, Marathon City, Mosinee, Rothschild, Spencer, and Stratford. POSITION SUMMARY: This is a full-time position with the Circulation Services Team of the Headquarters Library in Wausau. The purpose of this position is to provide extraordinary service to our patrons and fellow library staff. The focus of this position is working at the circulation desk at the Wausau Headquarters. This position contributes innovative and progressive solutions to provide increasingly better customer service. The work is performed under the direction of the Lead Library Assistant and/or the Support Services Manager. Hours can include days, evenings, and weekends. Additional hours to attend meetings, workshops or to fill in for other staff may be required. QUALIFICATIONS: Associate’s degree, with two years of experience in a public library or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities. Assists patrons in identifying, locating, checking in and out materials, collecting fines and related charges. Issue library cards to patrons. Search library catalog in answer to patrons’ questions and place holds for patrons as requested. Interpret, explain, and enforce library policies and procedures to public as appropriate. May assist in processing passport applications. Monitors severe weather radio, make announcements to the public concerning severe weather warnings/watches, and carry out procedures for severe weather events. Pulls requested materials from shelves using reports. Assists patrons with the computers and Internet. Takes responsibility for managing the development of one’s own career, including a commitment to lifelong learning and periodic retooling of personal skills set. Carries out policies, procedures, and practices of the Marathon County Public Library. Balances daily receipts from fines and fees; maintains and reconciles cash account. Attends workshops and meetings; reads book reviews, library journals and professional literature and periodicals to maintain current professional knowledge and abilities. Answers telephone calls, takes, and relays messages. Unpacks materials coming into the library. Checks in materials received by the library. Develops and maintains positive relationships with staff and patrons. Maintains regular and predictable attendance; works extra hours as required. Performs related work as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Thoroughly enjoys working with the public. Ability to provide guidance, assistance and/or interpretation to others, such as co-workers and the public, on how to apply policies, procedures, and standards to specific situations. Ability to communicate orally and in writing with patrons, library staff, students, volunteers and community organizations. Ability to process, calculate, compute, and sum numbers and/or information. Includes the ability to perform subsequent action in relation to these computational operations. Ability and willingness to serve patrons and staff with empathy, genuineness, eagerness, energy, and enthusiasm. Ability to show acceptance and understanding by being open, courteous, and considerate. Ability to relate to everyone as a possible source for learning. Ability to support leadership and management. Ability to contribute helpful energy and creative ideas. Ability to lift 25-50 lbs. and push book carts weighing 50-100 lbs. Has experience with computer applications, but not limited to Microsoft Suite. Ability to operate a variety of office and library equipment. Knowledge of library practices required.
