SALARY INFORMATION

Salary may be negotiable within the range listed above, based on position requirements and the successful candidate's qualifications, subject to appropriate authorization.

In addition to performance-based merit increases, this position is scheduled to receive salary range increases on the following dates:

Effective June 28, 2024 – 4.25% increase
Effective June 27, 2025 – 4.00% increase

This recruitment is being held to establish an open eligible list to fill current and future Airport Maintenance Worker positions. The current vacancy is within OC Public Works. This recruitment may also be used to fill positions in similar and/or lower-level classifications.

AIRPORT MAINTENANCE DIVISION
The Maintenance Division's mission is to ensure safe, clean, and dependable facilities at JWA. The Division manages projects, contracts, maintenance, and general services focused on ensuring a superior guest experience, a safe and secure airport, and optimizing the useful life and reliability of JWA systems, equipment, and facilities in a proactive, cost-effective manner.

The JWA Maintenance Division is a unit within the OCPW Department. The Division manages the maintenance and repair of most County-owned and operated facilities, systems, and assets at JWA, including approximately 3.4 million square feet of building space spread over 17 facilities on over 500 acres.

THE OPPORTUNITY
OC Public Works has an exciting opportunity for an Airport Maintenance Worker in our John Wayne Airport, Maintenance Division.

The Airport Maintenance Worker will, under supervision, perform a variety of semi-skilled and manual labor tasks including maintaining airport facilities.

Primary responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Performing a wide variety of maintenance and repair projects requiring building trade or mechanical trade skills. Operating various pieces of heavy equipment, such as a sweeper, dump truck, and forklift
  • Servicing and repairing automatic security gates, doors, and locks
  • Learning and using Computer Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) to receive work orders, and document the completion of tasks
  • Laying out roadway dividing stripes, pad lines, and various directional signs
  • Effectively use computer tools such as Word, Excel, and Outlook at a basic level
  • Performing the full range of semiskilled maintenance tasks required at the airport

  • Performing tasks associated with clean up of trash and debris in flood control channels, pump stations, dams, and basins
  • Conducting initial assessment when responding to a service call. Making appropriate repairs if within the scope of responsibility and training, and/or escalating repair to an appropriate skilled trades or contracted service provider; if escalating a repair to skilled trades or contracted service provider, taking any immediate steps necessary to ensure passenger safety/guest experience (e.g. posting warning signs; marking area out of service; restricting access)

  • Recording work completed, timekeeping, equipment, and material
  • Reading and interpreting blueprints of airport facilities

WORK HOURS: (4/10) Schedule; one weekend day per week (Please note days are subject to change). JWA anticipates the schedule or shifts for positions filled with this recruitment will be similar to one of the following:
  • Day Shift: 5:00 A.M. – 3:30 P.M. (4-10's including one weekend day)
  • Swing Shift: 12:30 P.M. – 11:00 P.M. (4-10's including one weekend day)
  • Night Shift: 8:00 P.M. – 6:30 A.M. (4-10's including one weekend day)

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE AND CORE COMPETENCIES
The ideal candidate will possess two (2) or more years of commercial and/or industrial facilities experience performing work at the semi-skilled level in any of the following trades: electrical, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, painting, heavy equipment operation, and HVAC. A Class B License with Air Brake Endorsement is required.

In addition, the ideal candidate will also possess extensive experience and knowledge in the following core competencies:

Technical Knowledge
  • Working with and understanding technical information related to the job responsibilities for this position
  • Understanding of reading and analyzing blueprints and schematics
  • Operating sweepers, heavy equipment vehicles, and trucks both on and off-road, as well as forklift and scissor lifts
  • Responding promptly and effectively in airport emergencies
  • Basic computer skills, Microsoft Suite
Industry | Safety Knowledge
  • Understanding of typical job requirements for line-level trades and technicians required by California Occupational Safety and Health (Cal-OSHA)
  • Experience following safety programs
  • Knowledge of safety and building codes applicable to the construction, maintenance, and repair of industrial facilities
Effective Communication
  • Ability to work positively and effectively to resolve issues and develop collaboration within internal team settings as well as with County of Orange agencies and or external stakeholders
  • Ability to represent the organization effectively and communicate articulately, while demonstrating organizational integrity
  • Maintain cooperative relationships and deal tactfully within and across organizational lines
  • Maintain positive and professional responses during all work periods
  • Deliver technical and conceptual information clearly and articulately, both orally and in writing, to a wide variety of audiences

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

LICENSE
Possession of a valid California Driver's License, Class B by date of appointment and while employed in this series.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL, ENVIRONMENTAL AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical and Mental Requirements
Continuous upward and downward flexion of the neck. Frequent walking, standing, bending and twisting of neck; bending and twisting of waist; squatting, simple grasping, and reaching above and below shoulder level. Occasional sitting and repetitive use of hands to operate computers, printers, and copiers. Incumbents use physical strength and agility on a continual basis, including lifting objects frequently weighing up to 50 pounds, and, on occasion, required to assist in lifting and transporting objects weighing up to 70 lbs.

Environmental and Working Conditions

Exposure to all types of weather, including extreme temperatures and inclement weather. Constant exposure to aircraft noise, high-pitched noises, fumes and odors, and other airport-related conditions.

RECRUITMENT PROCESS

Online Exam | (Refer/Non-Refer): An online exam consisting of job-related questions will be administered. Candidates who pass this test will be referred to the next step

Structured Oral Interview | SOI (Weighted 100%)
Applicants will be interviewed and rated by an oral interview panel of job knowledge experts. Each applicant's rating will be based on responses to a series of structured questions designed to elicit the applicant's qualifications for the job. Only the most successful candidates will be placed on the eligible list.

Eligible List | Score Groups: Once all assessments have been completed, HRS will establish an eligible list of candidates. Candidates placed on the eligible list may be referred to a selection interview to be considered for present and future vacancies.

Based on the Department's needs, the selection procedures listed above may be modified. All candidates will be notified of any changes in the selection procedure.
