Under direct supervision of the Safety Compliance Manager, the Safety Coordinator is responsible for implementing and overseeing occupational safety and health (OSH) activities to continuously improve the working environment and manage the OSH administrative process. The Safety Coordinator will design and facilitate training based on identification of training needs. Use a range of OSH tools and processes to implement innovative site-level activities to identify, implement, and monitor critical risk controls and improve OSH. May oversee a small site OSH team.
- An associate’s degree in safety, health, and environment preferred.
- Minimum of five years experience in any position that includes specific duties and responsibilities in training or in a similar environment or, equivalent combination of education and work experience sufficient to perform the duties of the positon.
- Valid State of New Mexico Driver’s license or able to obtain within six (6) months of employment.
- Have obtained or working on obtaining any safety certification
- Work is performed primarily in an office environment with some outdoor activity; may be subject to repetitive motion such as typing, data entry and vision to monitor; may be subject to extended periods of intense concentration in the review of documents and reports.
- May be subject to bending, reaching, kneeling and lifting such as retrieving files, records, and reports.
- Work schedule for this position may include working on religious holidays, or after hours.
- Utilize, process, and navigate the County’s electronic ERP system as necessary and appropriate based on the needs and requirements of this position.
- Some work duties may be performed “remotely” outside of County facilities. For remote access you must complete and maintain a current remote work agreement.
- Ensure compliance with OHS management system by writing and updating safe working procedures in collaboration with operational staff. Facilitate, monitor, and provide feedback on the implementation of operational plans. Maintain an up-to-date repository of internal and external OHS information, regulations, standards, and best practices.
- Cultivate relationships with line managers and supervisors to influence and motivate them in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and serve as their trusted advisor. Engage with supervisors and middle managers to develop responsibility and leadership in OHS. Build relationships with supervisors and managers to enhance their understanding of potential disparities between documented procedures and actual work practices.
- Monitor and provide feedback on compliance with safety-critical procedures. Contribute to monitoring compliance with OHS requirements. Monitor and report on the effectiveness of risk management and OHS management processes.
- Coordinate workplace inspections, facilitate hazard identification processes, and advise on hazard controls for routine and complex tasks. Identify consequences, potential risks, and critical controls, contributing to risk factor analysis. Develop OHS performance reports for site and regional managers with actionable recommendations. Proactively intervene to stop unsafe work.
- Support processes to investigate, analyze, record and report on incidents and nonconformities. Mentor operations personnel to participate in incident investigations.
- Participate in OHS hazard and management system audits.
- Conduct and analyze effectiveness of emergency drills.
- Support systematic management reviews to assess, monitor and identify areas for improvement in OHS.
- Make recommendations to improve OHS.
- Use and maintain OHS data management systems.
- Implement OHS-related communication and consultation processes.
- Prepare OHS training and information material. Conduct / support OHS skill development for supervisors and workers.
- Communicate and liaise with business partners, OHS regulators and other external bodies on behalf of the organization.
- Ensure currency of own OHS technical knowledge and knowledge of industry practice.
- Provide leadership in OHS and act as an exemplar of good OHS practice and behavior to peers, coworkers and the public.
