About the Position
The County of San Luis Obispo Public Works Department is seeking fill a vacant Wastewater Systems Worker position who would like to advance their career in wastewater and has a passion for public service.

The position is in the Wastewater Utilities Division. The Division’s wastewater operations range from a newly commissioned-award winning state of the art 1.1 MGD class IV tertiary wastewater treatment plant to a 0.1 MGD aerated lagoons with spray fields for treated water disposal.   The Division operates and maintains three wastewater collections and treatment systems plants in Los Osos, Oak Shores, and San Luis Obispo with a recycled water distribution system and two sewer collections systems in Nipomo and the County Operations Center.  Responsible staff in the division include 8 state certified wastewater treatment operators and a lab technician.

This position offers an annual salary range of $46,446 - $98,800 (depending on qualifications & experience) plus a generous benefit package and promotional opportunities. 
 
Note: This recruitment may be used to fill future permanent, substitute, limited term, and temporary positions, both full-time and part-time throughout the County.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have practical knowledge and experience performing a wide variety of unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled work in the operation, maintenance, and light construction activities associated with wastewater collection systems, wastewater treatment, and wastewater disposal systems. The ideal candidate will also possess strong collaboration, communication, and organization skills, as well as strong initiative, which will be key components to the success of the position and advancement in the career series. The position requires a strong commitment to workplace safety activities, practices, and standards.

Education and Experience

All levels: Graduation from high school or possession of a general educational development (GED) certificate.

Wastewater Systems Worker Trainee: No experience required.
Wastewater Systems Worker I: One year of qualifying experience as a wastewater treatment plant operator or equivalent in accordance with the SWRCB (Chapter 26, Title 23 of the California Code of Regulations).

Wastewater Systems Worker II: Two years of experience as Wastewater Systems Worker I or equivalent in accordance with the SWRCB (Chapter 26, Title 23 of the California Code of Regulations).
Wastewater Systems Worker III: Three years of experience as a Wastewater Systems Worker II or equivalent in accordance with the SWRCB (Chapter 26, Title 23 of the California Code of Regulations).

Licenses and Certificates

Certain positions within this classification may require driving. When driving is an essential function of the position, a valid CALIFORNIA driver license will be required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
 

Wastewater Systems Worker Trainee: No certificate required. Within 24 months of appointment must possess a valid SWRCB Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Grade I Certification.

Wastewater Systems Worker I: Possession of a valid SWRCB Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Grade I Certification or equivalent. Within 24 months of appointment must possess a SWRCB Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Grade II Certification, which must be maintained throughout employment.

Wastewater Systems Worker II: Possession of a valid SWRCB Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Grade II Certification or equivalent. Within 36 months of appointment must possess a SWRCB Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Grade III Certification, which must be maintained throughout employment.

Wastewater Systems Worker III: Possession of a valid SWRCB Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Grade III or higher Certification or equivalent, which must be maintained throughout employment.


Other Specifications

Must be willing and able to work alternating shifts and weekend work to provide coverage after normal workday or irregular and on-call emergency requests on nights, weekends, and holidays.

Must successfully pass initial and recurring respirator fitness test.

Based upon work location or assignment, incumbents may be required to keep hair and facial hair consistent with the ability to ensure proper use of safety equipment.
