What are the responsibilities and job description for the Greenhouse Seeding Staff position at Coveyou Scenic Farm Market?
Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced vegetable Greenhouse Seeding Staff member to be part of our organic produce production team. This person is responsible for seeding and growing all of the vegetable transplants grown on our farm. The Greenhouse Seeding Staff member is the sole person who runs our tray vacuum needlepoint seeding machine and grows our transplants prior to the plants going to the field. This member also coordinates all transplanting, herb production and produce grown in the 4800 square foot greenhouse. Additionally, this person will set up and sell vegetable transplants to the public from the transplant greenhouse.
When not growing our transplants, this person will play a crucial role in post harvest produce handling, packing and order filling. The hours needed to seed diminishes in the July through October timeframe and this person will assist others in our harvested vegetable washing / packing area of the farm when not seeding.
This position requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, knowledge of plant production and a comfort with mechanical machines. This is a seasonal position from March through October. It has the potential to be seasonally part time with periods in early spring that are full time.
Duties
- Seed a wide array of plants in a tray system to a seeding plan on schedule.
- Run, optimize, adjust and inspect quality of vacuum tipped needlepoint seeder for various tray sizes and seed types.
- Water, grow, inspect all seeding trays to obtain high yielding trays of transplants from seeding to the time they are transplanted to the field.
- Transplant to larger containers tomatoes, peppers, herbs and other plants as needed.
- Set up and sell transplants to the public in the May through June timeframe
- Continually work to improve the efficiency of our seeding operation
- When not seeding from mid summer onwards, work to wash, pack and fill orders for wholesale produce being delivered to stores, restaurants and institutions.
- Be part of a small team to assure timely delivery and accuracy of all produce orders.
- Maintain a clean and well organized work environment.
- Implement process improvements to enhance operational efficiency.
- Assist other farm staff members with tasks as needed
