The School Resource Officer (SRO) serves as the primary link between the Eaton Police Department and the Eaton School District, providing law enforcement support to elementary, middle, and high schools. This role focuses on maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment through a visible and positive police presence, strong collaboration with school administrators and staff, and respectful engagement with students and families. The SRO exercises sound judgment in high-risk or sensitive situations, emphasizes fairness, equity, and de-escalation, assists with crime prevention and threat assessment, supports emergency preparedness, delivers educational presentations, and enforces applicable laws connected to school and student safety. The position has no direct supervisory responsibilities and reports to a Sergeant or Corporal under the general supervision of the Chief of Police.

Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong knowledge of current law enforcement practices, applicable laws, regulations, and Town policies governing police operations. The position requires a patient and professional approach, with the ability to mediate conflicts, communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, prepare clear and accurate reports, and testify competently in court or at hearings. Proficiency in the use of standard office equipment, computers, and law enforcement–specific software is essential, along with the ability to maintain positive relationships with staff and the public, represent the Town in a professional manner, and perform effectively under pressure while managing multiple and sometimes competing priorities.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Colorado P.O.S.T. certification required.
  • Postsecondary education preferred.
  • 3 years of previous patrol or SRO experience preferred.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check and pre-employment drug screen.
  • Must successfully complete the Eaton Police Department hiring process and Patrol Field Training Program with an additional school-based phase.
  • Must be willing to serve as an SRO for a minimum of 2 years.
HOURS OF WORK:
  • This position is full-time and scheduled for 40 hours per week. 
  • Primarily work Monday through Friday, dayshift, with occasional evening and weekend shifts for extracurricular activities and games. 
  • When school is not in session, the SROs could be assigned to other shifts which could include nights and weekends.

  • There is a frequent need to sit, stand, stoop, walk, and perform other similar actions during the workday. 
  • Incumbents require sufficient mobility to work in an office and field setting.

  • Work involves exposure to hazardous substances, potentially dangerous situations, and unpleasant work conditions such as adverse weather conditions. 
  • Incumbents may operate both office and physical equipment used in the field and occasionally will transport materials and supplies weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Incumbents must have the ability to travel to various locations; must be able to see in the normal visual range with or without correction, vision sufficient to read small print, computer screens and other printed documents; and must be able to hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
