Summary

Job Description – Laser Operator (Fabrication)

The Laser Operator is responsible for operating CNC laser cutting machines to cut and shape sheet metal according to project specifications. This position requires precision, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to read technical drawings and blueprints.

Key Responsibilities

• Set up and operate CNC laser machines to cut various types of sheet metal (carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, etc.)
• Read and interpret blueprints, work orders, and production schedules
• Select proper materials, nozzles, and settings for each job
• Perform routine maintenance on laser equipment to ensure optimal operation
• Inspect finished parts for accuracy and quality using measuring tools (calipers, tape measure, gauges)
• Monitor machine performance and make adjustments as needed
• Maintain a clean and organized work area in compliance with safety regulations
• Collaborate with other team members (welders, fabricators, engineers) to meet production goals
• Troubleshoot minor equipment issues and communicate major concerns to maintenance
  
  
  

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED; technical training or certificate preferred
• 1–3 years of experience operating CNC laser cutting machines (e.g., Trumpf, Amada, Bystronic, Mazak, etc.)
• Strong understanding of sheet metal types, gauges, and material behavior
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings
• Proficient with measuring instruments and inspection tools
• Basic computer skills and familiarity with CNC programming is a plus
• Attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety
  
  
  

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with CAD/CAM software
• Forklift certification
• Experience in a lean manufacturing environment
  
  
  

Work Environment

• Industrial fabrication shop with moderate to high noise levels
• Exposure to metal dust, sharp edges, and hot materials
• Requires wearing PPE such as safety glasses, steel-toe boots, and hearing protection
  
  
  

Physical Demands

• Stand or walk for long periods of time during a regular workday.
• Use hands and arms to reach for, handle and manipulate objects.
• Lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Climb up and down ladders, scaffolds, stairs, and other climbing devices.
• Carry tools and equipment.
• Work while in stooped, kneeling, crouched, and crawling positions.
• Be able to see naturally or with correction, to safely perform designated tasks.
